Should more casino revenue mean tax cut for St. Charles residents?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The Missouri Legislature last week voted to repeal a state law requiring St. Charles to cut the city property tax rate when the city’s share of Ameristar Casino admission receipts increases above 2007 levels. Gov. Matt Blunt has yet to say whether he will sign or veto the repeal bill. Should the state require the city of St. Charles to give local taxpayers some of its casino revenue in the form of a tax cut - or should the money all be dedicated to city services and salaries and capital improvements?

I would assume the “officials” running the City of St. Charles are elected, and I would assume that the citizens who elected those officials have some degree of trust and confidence in those elected officials.

Why shouldn’t the citizens of Charley Town allow their elected officials to determine where the casino revenues can be best spent?

Perhaps St Charles should save any revenues for social services. Every area that has casinos pays more out in social services within a very short time of building a gambling den. Gambling addicts are larger in number than the casino PR says. You will be paying out the money to the suddenly poor after the casino execs drag all that CASH money back to their little tax dodging caves. It’s sillier than the repubs ponzi schemes, yet you all keep falling for it.

I don’t live in St. Charles, but if I did or if the tax issue was within my property tax area, I’d say the money should be but to work to improve the services, salries and capital improvements.

Casino’s are always promoted as a way to provided funding for education and capital improvements/services, and then it seems the funds leak-out for every other things. Casino taxes should be placed in a “tax lock-box” and only spent on the approved expenses per the lock-box, and should never leak-out even in the form of a tax refund, in my opinion.

I know in my little St Louis County ‘burb, property taxes to the city are quite insignficant as the bulk of the revenue is generated from sales tax. How much of the property tax actually goes to the city of St Charles? Although every tax break helps, I just wonder if it is enough to be noticeable come tax bill time.

I think St.Charles should get a tax cut from the mighty casinos.

St. Charles should cut the city property tax rate allowing a tax break for it’s citizens. Why did the elected officials approve such a trashy casino business on our beautiful riverfront, in the first place?

I would say defer a tax cut and get serious about public transportation in St. Charles. I’ve lived there for years and if you don’t own a car you are at a massive disadvantage.

They should also invest in some of those great new inventions called SIDEWALKS.
