When can an employer insist employees keep views private?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

St. Louis University hoops coach Rick Majerus has said on a televised interview that he supports abortion rights and stem cell research. These views are counter to those of the Catholic Church. SLU is a Catholic institution.

Says Archbishop Raymond Burke in today’s story:

“It’s not possible to be a Catholic and hold those positions,” Burke said. “When you take a position in a Catholic university, you don’t have to embrace everything the Catholic church teaches. But you can’t make statements which call into question the identity and mission of the Catholic church.”

Burke says that he thinks Majerus should be…

Now, along with a host of Democrats, there’s a Republican Catholic in the race (Rudy Giuliani) who doesn’t line up with the Church on abortion. And Burke’s raised the issue again. “That is a cause of concern for me and for all bishops to find ourselves in this situation,” Burke told the Post-Dispatch. (Here’s a link to the story.)

In fact, Burke…

The star, the archbishop and the hospital — who did right?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

From our story on STLtoday.com right now:

Citing singer Sheryl Crow’s stance on abortion, Archibishop Raymond Burke said today he has resigned from the board of the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation, the fundraising arm of Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, in protest over Crow’s participation in an upcoming fundraiser.

Burke said his resignation came after prolonged discussion with the foundation’s board of governors regarding Crow, the pop singer who will take part in a benefit for the hospital this Saturday at the Fox Theatre. It will be hosted by broadcaster Bob Costas.

The story goes on to quote Burke, who says Crow…
