French lawmakers are once again considering a ban on burkas or full veils worn by Muslim women.
Last Monday, President Nicolas Sarkozy controversially told lawmakers that the traditional Muslim garment was “not welcome” in France, according to CNN.
The right of Muslim women to cover themselves is fiercely debated in France, which has a large Muslim minority but also a staunchly secular constitution.
In 2004, the French parliament passed legislation banning Muslim girls from wearing headscarves in state schools, prompting widespread Muslim protests. The law also banned other conspicuous religious symbols including Sikh turbans, large Christian crucifixes and Jewish skull caps.

Now that the latest approval polls are showing President Obama’s numbers slipping and media outlets have officially declared their honeymoon with Obama over, the president has once again lashed out on Fox News for their unfavorable coverage.
In a CNBC interview on Tuesday, Obama seemed to use Fox News as an excuse for his slipping approval numbers. He said:
“First of all, I’ve got one television station entirely devoted to attacking my administration.”

President Obama sought “common ground” during his speech in Cairo this morning. But American responses to the speech are already divided.
The White House said Obama’s speech contained no new policy proposals on the Middle East. [Obama] said American ties with Israel are unbreakable, yet issued a firm, evenhanded call to the Jewish state and Palestinians alike to live up to their international obligations.
At the same time, he said the same principle must apply in reverse. “Just as Muslims do not fit a crude stereotype, America is not the crude stereotype of a self-interested empire.”
