Did the media scare traffic away from Kingshighway?
Headlines and newscasts warned of gridlock, but drivers on Kingshighway these days say it’s less congested now than it was three months ago, before construction at Highway 40 started. According to Barnes Jewish Hospital, lane closures have been a “non-event.” Ambulance drivers say it’s easier now than before to get to the ER.
A similar non-event occured when Pope John Paul II visited St. Louis in 1999. News stories predicted the scene would be insanely crowded, but when the Popemobile finally made its way downtown there was only a handful of bystanders.
Did the media blow this issue out of proportion? Or do you think the headlines scared motorists away from Kingshighway and prevented the expected congestion?

The media is much better at scaring everyone into thinking there are serial snipers and rapists running amok in St. Louis.
I think a lot of people who live in the south city tend to take other roads that are less busy, especially when they come visit me in my mid-county crash pad. I am amazed at the maze which some of them have conquered. So, they avoid Kingshighway, Hampton, and Grand near hwy 40. Plus, there was all that construction around Barnes and the CWE which may have effected their routes.
A lot of Republicans don’t take Kingshighway because they are frightened of the lights on the bridge over I-44…..it reminds them of a progressive and enlightened city.
