Happy New Year - Highway 40 is closed

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Just about the time that you’ll be recovering from your New Year’s Eve revelry, road blocks will go up if your daily commute is on Highway 40 between Ballas Road and I-170.

Before the morning rush hour on Jan. 2, crews will set up blockades in both directions at Ballas Road on the west and at I-170 and Brentwood Boulevard on the eastern edge of the closure.

Today’s story by reporter Elisa Crouch explains that state contractors will immediately begin demolishing bridges over Lindbergh Boulevard, Brentwood Boulevard, and Clayton and Warson roads.

Once work west of I-170 ends, crews will close lanes from I-170 to Kingshighway until late 2009.

“There will be significant delays if people do not change their commuting times and habits,” said Ed Hassinger, district engineer for the Transportation Department.

With the first long-term closure coming in two months and four days from today, have you altered your daily commute or made alternate plans for getting to work, school or anyplace else in the path of the road project?

Living in South City and working at the airport means that for 2008 I doubt I’ll change my 40 to 170 and back routine. Come 2009 I’ll just head downtown and pick up 70.

For the most part up to now I’ve not had any traffic problems.

To a small degree, the impending 40 debacle influenced where The Wife and I chose to move when looking for a new house this past spring. We chose something that allows the two of us to get to our jobs without any rerouting. We’re counting on our daily commutes inducing many more headaches over the next two years, but such is life.

What in the world will this do to all the GPS systems? They are going to blow their fuses!

My wife is going to quit her part time job at the Galleria so now she doesn’t even have to worry about the traffic mess around that area.

I work at the Oakland/Hampton area and drive from St. Charles. I believe it’s going to be a day-by-day problem that I’ll have to deal with. I already get to work at 6:00 a.m. - I’m more worried about the commute home and have no idea which route I’ll take until that day comes. Sure wish I could work from home!

What many people do not realize, is that ALL of St. Louis will be affected. 270 will become a parking lot (already is at rush hour in many spots) as all of the former 40 drivers use 270 to get to and from 44/70. Then, all of the minor North-South routes will become clogged as people look to avoid 270.

40 drivers will increase traffic of:
270
44
70
Page
Lindbergh
All north-south roads
All east-west roads

MODOT is dumb.

Sorry, Steve D. - they will not all use 270 as evidenced by Hwy 141 right now. I am at 141/Big Bend and take 44 to downtown everyday. Judging by the increased back-up through Valley Park and the parking lot that is 44 eastbound between 141 and 270 every day (as opposed to 1-2 days a week 3 months ago) it is apparent that MODOT has not given a thought to what will happen to 141 between 40 and 44. It is already a nightmare and will only get worse. Anybody at MODOT reading this?

There’s pure irony in the fact that if our governor would have been from St. Louis, there’s no way highway 40 would’ve been touched until the alternative of light rail was continued at least, out to Lindbergh. It’s not hard to imagine him sitting on his gilt-edged commode laughing his brains out at all the St. Louisans that didn’t vote for him and perhaps, even harder at those who did.

I currently use Metro which I switched to recently to help cut down on the overall number of commuters on the road. There’s plenty of room on the buses and trains for more people to join us. I have a 28 mile commute and use my new found time to read instead of get frustrated at traffic jams.
