Blunt opts against re-election: Good riddance, or bad move?

Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt says he will not seek re-election for a second term. According to the story we’ve prepared for STLtoday:

Blunt released a TV address “announcing that having achieved virtually everything he set out to ahe set out to accomplish when he ran for governor he will not seek a second term.”

Will you be sorry to see Blunt go when his term expires? Or are you pleased to know he won’t be back? Is this the end for Blunt’s political career or is he destined for bigger things? And if that’s what you think, where do you think he’s headed?

NOTE: Should have updated this earlier. Here’s a link to Wednesday’s story after Blunt’s news conference.

Also, here’s Blunt’s announcement as seen on YouTube.

It’s no great secret Gov Blunt has national aspirations. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he runs for Senate. Jay Nixon is enormously popular and even though Blunt has been a good governor, it would have been a tough campaign.

He’s got millions from his political contributions that he can keep. I’d quit too.

Bob J, it sure sounds good to you but you obviously don’t have a clue about the bottom line. First off, how many poor people give you a job? What is wrong with profit? What does business have to do with any of this? One way or another we as taxpayers pay the bill, for those of us that pay taxes and don’t live off the government. There are so many people I know who supposedly can’t afford health care. However, they can afford a 2nd and 3rd vehicle, a boat. how about that new HD TV, or we can talk about eating out all the time. At what point is health care their own responsibility? There are so many free loaders on our Medicaid system that it’s not even funny. I can’t afford it because of all you people with handouts. I grew up on welfare with loser parents and loser family who think it’s someone else’s job to pay for their stuff. Sorry, I don’t buy your comments. Just tell me one thing, why is it business’s job to pay for anything you want or need? All they will do is add to the price of their product. That is real economics, not this phony baloney guilt type social responsibility that you are referring to. i have noticed the huge majority of comments about the redistributing of tax money to pay for health for mostly deadbeats. If you have a kid take care of your own.

I also noticed you said nothing about the Clinton regime or the Carnahan regime. What about those families of politicians? Oh, I guess they are ok? Let’s not kid anybody here. I am not a fan of these families of politicians on either side of the aisle. However, voters continue to vote these clowns in office. Also, what good person would want to subject themselves to this kind of punishment? I certainly care about people but i want to see them get off their fat butts and do something and keep their hands out of my wallet.

I suspect that the decision was a pragmatic one based on poll numbers and the general mood in the country (and state) for change. He’s young and presumably still interested in a political career. A loss would be a major setback. Better to sit this one out than to lose. He’ll be back.

That fact that this came so suddenly means one of three things. He was finally implicated in the Jack Abrahamoff scandal (he and his dad benefitted anlong with Tom Delay) or someone finally spoke up about the state of Missouri implementing e-mail archiving in 2003 (which they did).

Or most likely that he will run for his father’s seat (he had no chance of re-election anyway) when he retires. The morons in Springfield would be the only ones dumb enough to elect him for anything again leaving Bond’s seat out of his reach in this state.

There is no doubt this man is a criminal, I just wish he would have gone to jail instead of stepping aside.

Personally I think Roy Blunt is involved in this matter and their could be a back door deal going on. Even those in his own party seem perplexed.
I think Jay Nixon will make an excellant governor. He has worked his way up and paid his dues.

Naval Academy graduate, active duty Navy officer, state assemblyman, secretary of state, and oh, and by the way - he was Governor of Missouri all by age 37.

Yup, now I see why so many despise him.

Roy’s boy has brought this state to #1 in the country and there is obviously no further need for his leadership. HHHAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!! According to some inside info, a major financial scandal that will soon come to light will bring him down further, if that’s possible.
