Did Edwards add to the race? Are you sorry he’s out?
The reports are out: Former Sen. John Edwards is dropping out of the race for the Democratic nomination for president. Unable to win any of the primary states up to this point, finishing far behind in Florida, and likely running out of money, he’s gone as of noon today (St. Louis time).
According to the AP story on the subject:
The former North Carolina senator will not immediately endorse either candidate in what is now a two-person race for the Democratic nomination, said one adviser, who spoke on condition of anonymity in advance of the announcement. Both candidates would welcome Edwards’ backing and the support of the 56 delegates he had collected.
Did Edwards add something to the race, which now comes down to Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama? Are you sorry he’s out? Does it mean anything to the Republican race?

I agree with Josh #4, Obama or Hillary should include them in their administration, should they be elected. He was going to be my choice on the February 5 primary. Yes, he would have been a president of the people, not Corporate America. I only wish New Hampshire and Iowa would have listened to his voice of reason. Our country surely is the loser. If McCain wins, it will be war, war, and more war. Keep the military out of the presidency!
Wow, whats really scary is the number of people on this blog that didn’t see through his shtick. So many candidates use the populist, “I’m one of You”, message. IT’s NEVER TRUE people. Not one candidate on either side knows what our lives are like. What Americans should look for is not a buddy or someone we THINK understands us, but the person that seems to be the strongest leader and a good decision maker.
I’ll also shake my head at the people that don’t understand what socialized healthcare is. It’s right in the name, SOCIALISM. These people think that magically we’re all going to get free healthcare, and I bet they think the nice Democrats are only going to make the very rich pay for it. Uh-uh. The middle class will pay the hardest because they will take an even larger percentage of our earnings to pay for it. It won’t be limited to the ultra wealthy. You think the economy is bad now, wait until that tax increase. Not to mention the chaos that will ensue at your local doctors office. If you get a headache it will be a year before you can see a doctor. America will become basically an emergency care only nation, run by the same people that run the DMV. Good luck with that.
I think it’s a crime that the media turned this into a 2-person race for the Democrats from the beginning. The media grabbed hold onto the “black man candidate vs. woman candidate” to sensationalize the run for the presidency. Unlike the Republican race, where for the most part the candidates have gotten equal coverage, the Democratic race has CONSISTENTLY been about Obama and Clinton, with barely a side note about Edwards’ campaign, or Kucinich, or Gravel….When Americans are consistenly bombarded with the idea that only 2 candidates truly have a chance, then most of those people get a “why bother” attitude towards the other candidates and therefore don’t ever take the time to learn about them. Edwards, by far, was the candidate who would’ve come into that office and made changes right off the bat. I am discouraged that I will not at least be able to vote for him in the primary next Tuesday. Now I have to scramble to decide between the other two in a matter of days. Clinton and Obama both have some good qualities, but among other negative attiributes, I don’t think either has the guts to make real change now like Edwards would have. Too bad the media had an agenda and had to ruin it for everyone. Thanks to them, Edwards and other quality candidates have been ignored, and they have played a huge role as to how this election plays out.
I felt bad for him from the get go. His wife being as sick as she is was truly a deciding factor for me in not taking his campaign too seriously. I had hoped he would of backed out and that he would of never started the run for presidency because she needed to be his first priority. It may seem cruel, but I didn’t want the guy who may of been elected to lead our country having to constantly divert his attention towards his spouses health issues.
John Edwards was the only candidate of either party who I connected with on this campaign. I’m sorry I won’t have the opportunity to vote for him in the Missouri primary.
John Edwards Populist message will be missed. He was not the perfect candidate by any means, but he was really the only one talking about Corporate greed, the plight of the working class and poverty. I hope that he can find another forum to advance these ideas His support for Universal Health care has been important also. We need as many voices out there as possible to see this become a reality. I read that many of his supporters, mostly lawyers, would like to see him made the next Attorney General and I believe he is a great guy to get that mess turned around.
From the theme of these blogs, it seems we must be living in the USSA.
John Edwards was the biggest phony in the race.
Amazed……………………..go away you are so tiresom.
I too am amazed and the support this shuck and jive schiester has this level of support. His whole campaign was built on division, not unity. His blatantly false campaign promises should never be forgottten, “When John and I are in office, people like Christopher Reeves will walk again” is politics of the worst kind, kind of like his trial tactics of channeling dead children to win a judgment against the doctors. The degree of difference between the three dem candidates was minimal, and he had the least amount of appeal between them, although he was more direct in expressing their views.
Amazed, you know I lean conservative but that my foundation is more moderate/libertarian. I have to agree with you, though. These comments about connecting with him, speaking to Corporate greed and most of all Universal (Socialistic) Healthcare are frightening. It just shows what sort of electorate we have.
Not to mention that a good voter should analyze and consider all the candidates from both parties. My personal preference on the Democratic side was Joe Biden. Again, style over substance. However, I hear so many people say that now that he’s out they need to pick between Barak and Hillary. Why not open up and at least listen to the other side? It’s not like Bush is running again. People shouldn’t be so bound to a party that they HAVE to take a democrat or a republican. If your guy isn’t in it anymore, look at all the remaining candidates. Otherwise you’re being horridly short-sighted.
