Did Edwards add to the race? Are you sorry he’s out?
The reports are out: Former Sen. John Edwards is dropping out of the race for the Democratic nomination for president. Unable to win any of the primary states up to this point, finishing far behind in Florida, and likely running out of money, he’s gone as of noon today (St. Louis time).
According to the AP story on the subject:
The former North Carolina senator will not immediately endorse either candidate in what is now a two-person race for the Democratic nomination, said one adviser, who spoke on condition of anonymity in advance of the announcement. Both candidates would welcome Edwards’ backing and the support of the 56 delegates he had collected.
Did Edwards add something to the race, which now comes down to Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama? Are you sorry he’s out? Does it mean anything to the Republican race?

re RCJ (20) hey I am a moderate libertarian too, but I am VERY frightened by the totality of American corporate power over the individual and a lack of health care for 50 million citizens.
(I am not frightened of beads and drunk chix at Mardi Gras though)
John Edward’s populist and green message is very similar to Obama’s, and somewhat similar to Hillary’s. I think his dropping out helps Obama more than Hillary. I’m curious to see if he will be asked to run as Veep. He would ceratainly help balance out the ticket.
With Guilliani gone, I think McCain will get the nod for the GOP. He a good guy, and is the only Republican who stands a chance against this new proigresive juggernaut. Romney is NOT the kind of d#*khead we need right now, and Huckabee is likeable even though I oppose almost everything he stands for, other than him being a supporter of the Fair Tax (great idea) and is a half-decent guitarist.
Rob - I know yor posts are mainly jests, but explain healthcare. Who’s responsibility is it to provide and procure it and what do you think will be the lasting effects of massive changes? I understand the concern, but saying that the government should control and provide it is an untoughtout cop out. The Fed doesn’t have the responsibility nor does the tax payer. And I don’t think our government can properly set up and run a system. More issues will come down the road. A fix may be in order, but I still have yet to hear a competent arguement for a good course of action. Just that some action should be taken.
As for corporate America, what is your proposal there? What regulations do you propose or legislations should be brought? How do those proposals jive with our freedoms? Again, a lot of people talk about “fighting corporate America” without saying how. Edwards was in that boat. Jingoistic is jingoistic. Nothing should be done for the sake of action and no one should be elected on an issue without at least putting forth a cohesive plan of action. I’m still waiting to hear it.
To me what this really boils down to really is social ideology. People don’t really care about Corporate America or at least they don’t think things really will change. They just want a guy in that reflects their personal ideology. Is he/she pro-choice or pro-life? Are they a woman or a man, a black man or a white man? And I’ll submit that anyone that hears the jingoistic phrases of “I’ll do this or fight that” without actually hearing a plan or a reasoning of how are stupid.
Example. I want immigration fixed. I want the border closed and regulated, I want illegal immigrants to come forward and apply for visas and be reviewed and I want the process of coing into America fized. More control over who is coming in without the beauracracy that makes people want to come in illegally. Most candidates have an actual stated opinion and I can run my opinion past those opinions. By contrast fearing corporate america isn’t a fleshed out opinion. It’s a fear. Candidates speak to those fears by saying that they will fight corporate greed, without saying how. Get my point? Its the same thing as a person saying they will fight terrorism without saying where, or how. Its a jingo.
Edwards was great at jingos and slogans.
Edwards’ message is ahead of it’s time….Or maybe the lowering of this nation’s educational standards doomed his warnings of corporatism. FDR’s message was accepted by are parents and grandparents generation. It helped establish a strong middle class and helped make America strong….not in debt to the rest of the world.
I doubt if Roosevelt could get his message to the current “Homer Simpson - Paris Hilton” crowd.
See “ditto-head” comments above.
Run Off voting would give everyone an opportunity to say, this is my first choice… this is my second choice…. this is my third choice. hopefully move us away from the two-horse race, and the inevitability that we vote against candidates rather than for them.
will we ever work together for tangible Solutions???
I really am amazed at all the people on these posts that use the word “socialism” like it is a dirty word. or something to be afraid of . . . corporatism, there is something to fear! i usually just assume these people have not gotten a chance to travel outside of the United States. Education is only real when lived & experienced, growing up i was extremely fortunate to spend every summer in Canada, you will hear positive stories and negative stories about the Canadian Health Care system, even from within my own family. But one thing is clear, there is an overall effect that “health care” has on that society; a sense of we are all in this together, a sense of helping out the person next to yourself, or helping them out first then asking questions later. The feeling I have always had in this country is every man, woman, and child for themselves. i believe we are ready for a paradigm shift even if it were to involve that dirty word “socialism”
re RCJ (21) I feel it is the governments responsibility to provide healthcare for those who need it and/or can not afford it. This can be accomplished through income tax deductions. Unemployed (or unemployable people) often don’t pay the bill, thus dissing the hospital or doctor, resulting in higher costs for everyone else. I believe corporations and small companies should be relieved of the burden of subsidizing healthcare for their employees.
Corporations that repress their workers and citizens via slave wages, downsizing, offshoring, outsourcing, pollution, bad products, etc. should be boycotted on an individual basis, like many people do with Walmart and AB and I do with Home Depot and Roxy’s.
Garrison, the debt amassed during Roosevelt’s terms make GWB look like Ebenezer Scrooge.
In Edward’s “I quit” speech, he said on his way to give the speech he passed more than 100 homeless people living under a bridge. Did he stop and share some of his riches? Did he stop and ask about their situation? Did he stop and offer advice on how to find a shelter or a welfare office to get help? Hell no. He just kept going. He will give his speech and slink back to his cozy mansion quietly because the dude is a loser politically. No one in their right mind would pick him as a running mate again. On second thought, neither Hillary or Barack are right-minded so they may just pick him. I hope they do.
Gabe is an advocate of socialism. Have you met Garrison yet? I have a feeling you two will get along nicely.
Well, I suppose winning a World War as oppossed to having some towel head in Afganistan giggle at our U.S. President for 5 years has it’s price…..I question your numbers.
Edwards espouses a new national direction….one man can’t do it by himself. Your babble is ridiculous….Makes about as much sense as claiming Romney should have spent $40 million purchasing body armor for our troops he wants to keep in Iraq…..instead of spending it on Ken Doll “Fabio” television commercials in Florida.

. . . some of us should be ashamed in what we believe!
Gabe Kea
Garrison, if every single speech Romney made was about the lack of body armor our troops have, then you are damn right I would be questioning how many units he has purchased recently. Edwards’ campaign theme has been to eradicate poverty and yet he hasn’t done one damn thing on a personal level in order to do so.
Gabe, how is my posting under a monicker is similiar to you advocating socialism?
