Did Edwards add to the race? Are you sorry he’s out?
The reports are out: Former Sen. John Edwards is dropping out of the race for the Democratic nomination for president. Unable to win any of the primary states up to this point, finishing far behind in Florida, and likely running out of money, he’s gone as of noon today (St. Louis time).
According to the AP story on the subject:
The former North Carolina senator will not immediately endorse either candidate in what is now a two-person race for the Democratic nomination, said one adviser, who spoke on condition of anonymity in advance of the announcement. Both candidates would welcome Edwards’ backing and the support of the 56 delegates he had collected.
Did Edwards add something to the race, which now comes down to Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama? Are you sorry he’s out? Does it mean anything to the Republican race?

Amazed: I hear you. You and your neocon buddies rant about how we need to “win” the war in Iraq, but have any of you enlisted? What have you done on a personal level to “win” the war?
And that “Support Our Troops” bumper sticker doesn’t count.
Interesting that the only negative comments about John Edwards came from folks that will be voting Republican (any Republican will do).
I guess he scared a few folks, eh? You can tell they’re scared when they wheel out the old “socialism” tirade.
I’ve never put out a house fire but I support my local firefighters. Does that make me a hypocrite?
Funny how often the chicken hawk proxy argument gets horked up by people who can’t defend their position.
Edwards didn’t scare anyone expect people in his own party who knew he was phony but still capable of dividing votes between the two main candidates. His campaign was irrelevant from day one. Republicans didn’t have to lift a finger.
RCJ: \”jingos and slogans\”?
Fact: The wages of the American worker has not kept pace with increases in productivity. Where does that money go?
Fact: 2006 was the first year since 1929 that more corporate income went into profits than went into wage increases for employees (1929 - remember?).
Fact: More than one is six children lives in poverty in this country, with the effect being severe on families with a single woman as head of the household.
Fact: The poverty rate has increased in five of the last six years, even as the stock market went from 12000 to 14000.
I know you will wield your rationalization wand and try to make these facts go away, but they are still there.
Two word prescription for a health economy: spending power. The more people that have more money, the better it gets. Fewer people with more money, we go into the tank, a la right now.
\”Jingos and slogans\” eh? Ever read \”Grapes Of Wrath\”?
Mr. Fish: How in the world do you come by any information about the Democratic party?
And how, exactly, do you support your local firefighters? By paying your taxes? Or do you take a pot of chili to the firehouse every once in a while?
If paying taxes is all it takes, then I guess we all support the war in Iraq, don’t we? Good to know that I have lived up to the model of patriotism you have established.
Fact is, being president of the US allows one to address problems in a way that is not offered by any other occupation or single act.
Talk to your buddy Amazed - he’s the one demading “personal” actions.
Simple. I pay attention to what they actually say and do instead of regurgitating easily refuted and empty headed talking points. Democrats do blog, you know.
Keep up the proxy arguments. You’re good at them.
He Bob, what’s wrong with personal action? If Edwards feels strongly about helping people in poverty, he has the means to do so without any elections or campaigns. He chooses not to act. Fools such as yourself buy his nonsense. For 40+ years we have had a “War on Poverty” and the poverty rate has remained relatively constant.
I highly doubt you have ever read anything on here from me trumpeting the Iraq War. I may offer a counter point to some of you nut jobs every now and then but there are too many things about the war that I don’t particularly agree with. One thing is for certain, I would never degrade our servicemen or women for political gain as many in your party has chosen to do.
I could be wrong, but choosing to remain silent on the issue of the Iraq War is preferable to calling our servicemen murderers or claiming they terrorize innocent women in children as your respected party leaders have done.
just a few bad apples.
Yes, John Edwards added something to the race, and without challengers like him, the contenders become more vanilla as they drop. His theme of going after special interest groups in Washington is one that I would like to see be carried on, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
Skippy, they all say that. It never happens.
Obama’s been talking up for months how he refuses direct assistance from 527 groups yet he hides all the indirect assistance he’s been getting.
I voted for John Edwards and wished he would have stuck it out through Super Tuesday. It would have alloted him some additional delegats, giving him some power at the convention. I guess that shows he was not about the power or being a kingmaker (or queenmaker, as the case may be).
For those of you naysayers. How do you know John Edwards has personally never done anything about poverty? Really, if he pointed out any good works you would label him a braggart.
Someone posted “Not one candidate on either side knows what our lives are like.” Well, I would rather support someone who CARES what my life is like and has pledged to try to make a difference than some of these candidates and politicians who feel the American people are doormats for corporations.
