What should Bush have said in his State of the Union?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

President Bush, less than a year away from leaving office, gave his final State of the Union address tonight, offering little in the way of new initiatives — likely because, as the AP story says, “With his approval rating near its all-time low, Bush lacked the political clout to push bold ideas and he didn’t try.”

A major challenge for Bush in his address to Congress was simply being heard when many Americans already are looking beyond him to the next president.

Was that the case as you listened to Bush’s speech? Did you listen? And is there something you thought Bush should have said that he didn’t say?

I think he is doing a great job, the left smiled for a brief moment when he spoke of returning 20,000 some troops home. They still will not be happy the left is somewhat of a mystery in their ways.

It doesn’t matter what he should have said. The left will bash him, the right will praise him, and the candidates for both parties will continue to make promises that won’t be delivered if they are elected President. If you are expecting something else you’ve come to the wrong country…

What should he say.

How about starting with ” I’m sorry”.

I do not understand why the left is so quick to abandon Iraq.

Freedom and stability in such a vital region would be so beneficial to our country, and our way of life. Why in the world are they so quick to embrace defeat?

Bush has made more progress in the way of middle-east peace than any of his predecessors - Iraq, Libya, Lebanon, Afghanistan, and even Palestinian areas are showing signs of becoming more aligned with U.S. views than ever before. Yes, it has been painful along the way, but the end result will prove his vision was spot on.

I hope and pray that neither Hillary nor Obama are elected president.

re joe (5) “I hope and pray that neither Hillary nor Obama are elected president.”

What will you do when they are elected? Move to ” Iraq, Libya, Lebanon, Afghanistan, and even Palestinian areas”? They would like you….they love conservative over there……

He shoulda done what RUNT er Blunt did. The most corrupt pack of thieves ever to darken the Whitehouse door. I’ll never forget him sitting staring into the blankness after told of 9-11. The lame attempt at cool landing on an aircraft carrier. Brownie’s good job in New Orleans. Defending Donald Rumsfeld, Alberto Gonzalez and Haliburton. Baiting the Iraqi insurgents to “bring it on.” 10 billion dollars a month to Iraq. China has overtaken the USA as the real world power, Iran and North Korea can laugh at any lame threats attempted. Let’s not forget that Osama Bin-Laden is still free, As for the comments of one and four wish you could be my boss you’re way to easy on managers fire impeach or resign!

What should Bush have said? “I resign”.

1 - exactly how is bush “doing a great job”? is it the money being spent in iraq? is it that we’re on the verge of an economic recession at home?

4 - once again, how is this a “terrific economy”?

5 - the left is probably quick to abandon iraq because we should have never been there.

President Bush should do something to stop eminent domain abuse, but he won’t because he and Blunt and Slay are in bed with developers. Using phony “blight” findings to transfer property from the poor to the rich is criminal.

I saw red ties and blue ties, Hillary , Obama and Ted Kennedy and oh yeah, I think I remember hearing the President talking about something. It was the most uninspiring State of the Union address that I can ever recall listening to. Then again, what more could he say that he hasn’t already said and that I haven’t already dismissed?

Ask yourselves, are you better off now than you were 7 years ago?
Answered loudly by all across the country -H$LL NO!

Momama, if the republicans are doing such a great job why are you so sure the dems will take over, I thought this guy (the President) seemed out of touch.

iggy, speak for yourself.

I am much better off today than I was 1, 5, 7, 10 years ago. I would expect that I would continue that trend.

A person born in America today is better off than 90% of the World’s population. Opportunity abounds and yet you still have people that can’t figure it out.

Imagine how great this country really could be if the unproductive would become so and not continue to be carried by the productive.

I would have liked to hear pardons for Ramos and Campeon. Termination for Johnny Sutton. He should have pointed out that we will NEVER be free of foreign oil without using our own, and the three idiots running as democrats want NO drilling for oil. He should have said that the 11,000 earmarks placed in the omnibus spending bill against the new rules of Congress are all to be ignored. He should have pointed out that the fact that we havent suffered another major serious terrorist attack is NOT due to the jihadis lack of trying. He should have stated that despite the best efforts of the democrats in congress, we are winning in Iraq and within a year, could have most everything wrapped up. The line about the IRS accepting checks was great, I expect dems across the nation to be sending in their money today. I would have liked to hear him say that he is going to build the border fence and crack down on employees and employers of illegals, and that Julie Myers was being fired.

My family is much better off than we were 7 years ago. If people honestly looked at their situation instead of parroting media-driven economic hysteria, they would probably say the same thing. If they’re not, they most likely have no one to blame but themselves.

The President’s SOTU speech was like most others - long on rhetoric, short on action. I loved his line reminding liberals who don’t think they pay enough taxes that the IRS accepts checks and money orders.

Funny though how the supposed worst president ever continues to play the Democrats for chumps. Doesn’t say much about them, does it?

When cost of living triples and income flatlines there is somethig terribly wrong if you are better-off today than 7 yrs ago I’d bet you were pretty well off then. Its republican 101 the rich get richer and the rest of us be damned.

— Miz

Define “well off”.

Seven years ago I was nearing the end of my first career in the Army. Now I’m enjoying my second and raising a family at the same time. The cost of living has gone up since about forever. Blaming Republicans, or anyone else for that matter, for your own problems pretty much explains why you’re in the situation that you are. Don’t like your income? Then quit whining, pull your head out, and get to work.

My cost of living has actually gone down in the last few years. I downsized in house, have two older paid for vehicles, my outgoing bills on a monthly basis has been cut nearly in half. My income has gone up and my happiness couldn’t be higher.

I feel sorry for you sorry saps that are always angry about your lot in life.

The only thing a democrat will do to hurt me is raise my taxes if they are able. Other than that, I’ll continue living just as I do today. I can guarantee you I won’t be on a blog whining, bitching, and moaning like all the other sorry folks that think government owe them something or that taking from one group to give to another is the “American Way.”

I gave Johnh a link to an “on-line” self study course titled….”Using Grammar With Complete Sentencing”. Johnh might be busy for a few yearrr……..,I mean months.

The NY Times reports that Bush used 6 paragraphs from previous “State of the Union” speeches.
It was a “cut and paste” job…Kind of like his presidency.

Have you done a useful thing in your life Garrison?

We all know that the New York Times loves President Bush and would never slant a story to paint him in a negative light. Every article will give him an objective report just like our own hometown rag.

— cheech
4:30 pm January 29th, 2008

For all the economically challenged posters on these blogs:

the slowdown in the economy is due to many factors. The leading one was the feeding frenzy of risky loans that mortgage companies and banks made during the housing bubble which popped…and that bubble was probably the second largest reason why the economy is slowing.

There are plenty of other reasons such as the price of oil, the weaking dollar against other major currencies (which actually helps our exports become more affordable overseas), the rise in inflationary pressure in new economic powers like China and India (think Japan in 1990), etc etc etc

Congress and the President can have some affect on the economy, but people who thing they are solely responsible for it have no clue what the reality of economics is or how it plays out.

Momama, do you have any children or loved ones fighting this war you so callously cheer on? This must be your only outlet, lets hope your kids aren’t sacraficed needlessly. We all know now this war was manufactured so we need to stop supporting bad decision making.
