Will you miss the St. Louis County Fair and Air Show?
I remember visiting the Steak n’ Shake restaurant in the Chesterfield valley one weekend while we were making a run to Lowe’s. We were moving into our new house and, typically, had plenty of home-improvement work to do.
Suddenly, the roar of a fighter jet came out of nowhere. And I realized the air show was on. I’ve been to three of them since. Always hot and muggy on those Labor Day weekends, the air show never failed to wow me.
Now, it appears that the fair will be no more. West County development means the annual attraction is simply running out of room.
Were you a regular attendee? What was your favorite part of the fair, or the air show? Will you miss it? Does it trouble you that the roar of development may overwhelm the roar of aircraft?

This blows. I have gone to the fair with my family at least once every year for probably the last 6-7 years. We will miss it.
I tried to get there several times but I just can’t stand traffic. That’s why I moved out of a populated area. I’m sure many will miss it. Sometimes change is not always good.
I am so disappointed to hear this new. I would often choose to stay home from a weekend at the lake to take the family to the air show. The air show was one of the better ones I have seen and certainly better than anywhere in the state. Please don’t let this go!
For almost each of the 15 years, I think it’s been, that the County Fair and Air Show has been held I’ve worked (volunteered) at each. It’s so sad to lose this event - the money went to children who needed help and what better way could the people of our metropolitan area spend their money on over Labor Day weekend? Traffic was always difficult - the roads in Chesterfield valley were never designed to handle a few hundred thousand people at a time! But so many didn’t mind - they came to see the Blue Angels fly and their children looked forward to the Fair with the rides and animals and all the other events, so carefully planned for families to enjoy together. Yes, that was a key focus on the County Fair and Air Show - it was a family event! With barely a month or two gone after one County Fair, planning would begin for the next, but it hasn’t this time…developers have been buying all the land surrounding Spirit Airport, building new offices, parking lots, etc.
St. Louis County has lost something invaluable, not just for the childrens’ charities, but equally important for thousands of families, who were able to enjoy an exciting and fun-filled weekend together in St. Louis County. That will happen no more - how sad for so many reasons.
I’m really dissapointed to hear this. My family loves the air shows. We go to St. Louis County fair almost every year and to the airshows at Scott AFB whenever they have one. One of the things I always enjoyed was how the planes staged over St. Charles county near my home waiting their turn to fly by.
Bummer.
I am really sad to hear the air show is not going to happen next year. My family loved going every year. It reminded my husband and I of all of the great events we went to when we lived in D.C. It seems that St. Louis is slowly getting rid of all of the fun activities for families. Summer events are either now geared for 20 somethings or being eliminated all together. That is too bad.
Gosh, with the oceans of parking lots from Baxter to Eatherton, you’d think some sort of parking shuttles could be devised to make use of the usually empty majority of spaces. No matter, after the next flood, there will be plenty of parking.
My wife and I have made this an annual event for our family since it first started and haven’t missed an event yet. I will be a real shame to see this go away. Everyone turns into a kid again, even if you’re not an aviation buff, when you walk up close to the planes. Your imagination takes. The best part is jumping out of your skin (and seeing everyone else jump as well) when the Solo Blue Angel does his low level, high speed pass when you are not expecting him! I will truly miss this event if it really does go away.
As county fairs go, it was the worst I’d ever seen. Get out into the nearby counties for a taste of an authentic county fair.
Its a real shame. My son and I have been going every year since he was two and now he’s twelve. One other thing, does anyone remember what the Valley looked like in ‘93? Does anyone really think that the levee is a permanent solution?
