Five years in Iraq — how much longer will the war last?
Wednesday marks the five-year anniversary of the United States’ waging war on Iraq.
Since then, nearly 4,500 members of the U.S. military have died in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. You can read about some of them here.
Military commanders and analysts believe the war could go on for many more years. In fact, some believe this may just be the midpoint.
How long will the people support this war? The presidential candidates from both parties talk about the war, but does anyone have the solution? What do you think should happen?

Between the human and financial cost of this war, are we really getting much bang for our buck in terms of national security? We know that Iraq had no WMDs, no link to Al Qaeda, and posed no threat to the U.S. We also know that the 9/11 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia, and that most of the fighters entering Iraq now are Saudis. The repressive Saudi dictatorship is viewed by its people as a puppet of the U.S., but it is we who are the puppets until we can gain energy independence. Iraq is the wrong fight at the wrong time. How many more billion$ will we pour down that hole before our leaders realize that this is a political fight, not a military one?
Rather than how many more Billions are we going to spend, we should ask how many more people will die? And for what? This is the biggest debacle since Vietnam and I am not entirely optimistic that it’s not worse than Vietnam. President Bush should be impeached for war crimes and lying to the American People in order to start his war, and before he starts another endless war with Iran. He is a tyrant and a terrorist in our own land. But instead the media is more interested in Brittney Spears and American Idol. Wake up America
The people already do not support this world occupation. Except those who profit from the hard metal sales. Like publishing pictures of the coffins of the dead, it just is not allowed to be talked about in GB’s world. McCain says he doesn’t care if it takes 100 more years. That’s a lack of economic and diplomatic skills to say the least. It is not working. It never was. We have a little twerp who ducked military service, then did not listen to his military advisors through half of this fiasco. God help the next generation if this election does not go the right way. The midget cowboy has yet to figure out he has caused a financial meltdown and terrorists are now the least of our worries. The playbook has changed and he is still looking for a small enough jock to put on. The only question left when the financial papers are sorted out is which language will we be speaking? I doubt McCain’s old crooked loan company buds will be able to help him sort it out properly. Even if he throws his trademark tantrums and turns as red as the states who may vote for him….even though. Mission Accomplished…you can’t even giggle at the “special” child anymore. It’s too serious now.
The war in Iraq will continue until the American public protest mightly. By protesting mightly, I mean, go tot Washington, D.C. or your state Capitol on a specific day, specific hour, take your children with you, especially your sons because they are the ones you are going to lose. I agree with one of the other comments, George Bush and Dick (Deferment) Cheney should be impeached for crimes against humanity. It doesn’t do any good to contact your Congressman, I have done that numerous times. They are only interested in getting re-elected. Millions of dollars has been spent on these President of the U.S. campaign, Why??None of the people running are concered about the bottom line. We are losing our jobs, our homes, we are losing our families to drugs, we are being over run by illegal aliens who are taking our jobs, our pensions, our public aide, and what are people like Obama and McCain and Clinton doing about this…they want all the illegals to have a drivers license and receive free college tuition. I am 69 years old, too old to go to war but if you are a young person reading this, or if you have a son who is of draft age, and you don’t want him killed, you had better start paying attention and for God’s sake, do something.
Saint Louis has a murder rate of 37.2 per 100,000. Iraq has a population of 26 million. So statistically you are much safer in Iraq as a soldier than in Saint Louis.
Tell that to the 4,500 families of our dead soldiers Red, I’m sure they’d be quite impressed with your flippant reasoning. I wonder how many of our soldiers now in Iraq would prefer to stay there than to be reassigned to St. Louis.?
We’ll be there until we get a politician who will get us out of Iraq and they get whatever govt. they want whether it be democratic or not.
My neighbors son was killed in Afghanistan.. He was a boy we saw come into this world and we were also there when he was laid to rest. The price paid is already too high. The time spent in a war that can’t be justified is already too long. One death is unbearable, 4,500 is impossible to wrap your brain around. Go to Jefferson Barracks, read the tombstones of these young people, look at the mementos left at their graves. You will feel the love and the pride along with the heartbreak. Red Rob Red, being flippant about this subject is a slap in the face to all the soldiers stationed in these hell holes who are trying to protect your sorry self. Show some dignity and respect.
Red is aiding terror. Flippant remarks only aid the evil-doers.
Mission Accomplished!
The point most do not understand and that the current adminstration has been unable to voice is simply this; we have been headed to a confrontation with extemist Islamist in southern Asia for years. No Iraq was not a direct threat to our country but it was the easiest to access and occupy and it gave an excuse to our adminstration. Saddam Hussien felt it better to pretend he had WMD’s than oblige the west because he felt Iran as the greater threat. Iraq provides a staging area and a fighting area. By occuping the enemies land we force them to fight us on thier soil not ours. Al Qaeda while not in Iraq prior to the war are there now. In the five years of fighting we have re-directed our enemies attention we have not given them rest nor shelter. By bieng there we provide opprotunities to our forces to understand our enemy and to grow more adapt at stopping them. No one will ever completely stop terrorism and President Bush is delusional to think we can. This adminstration has been grossly inept at explaining to our country why we are there and why we fight. Our press even cant get the story straight. Never the less we as a nation can look at the whole picture as stated here or we can pretend that is was all just about the oil. Wake up America, dont put your head between your legs dont accept that the only way to resolve this issue to run and hide. The Islamist extremist believe that changing the world means suicide bombing those against them and lforcing others to live by thier rules and thier rules only. Clearly they dont speak for the entire region or for all Muslims but they have the ability to hurt masses of people and that alone is reason for me to believe in this war( not George Bush’s but the real one).
