Will Tibetan protests have an effect on the Olympics?

Clashes between Tibetan protesters and Chinese police on Sunday have threatened the Dalai Lama’s efforts to keep his campaign for Tibetan freedom a pacifist movement, even as they focus the world on his cause.

Stories in Sunday’s and Monday’s Post-Dispatch say that the protests spread from Tibet into three neighboring provinces Sunday as Tibetans defied the Chinese government crackdown. Demonstrations widened to Tibetan communities in Sichuan, Qinghai and Gansu provinces, forcing authorities to mobilize security forces across a broad expanse of western China.

In a sign that authorities were preparing for trouble, foreign journalists were ordered out of the Tibetan parts of Gansu and Qinghai provinces by police who told them it was for their safety.

With the Olympics games just around the corner – the Summer Olympic celebrations kick off with the start of the torch relay in two weeks – what’s your take on the actions in Tibet by Chinese authorities?

China authorities have already issued curfews in areas, and the U.S. State Department has issued travel warnings for tourists heading to China.

Will the protests have an effect on the Olympics?

I think it possible that a number of factors could affect China’s turn at hosting the Olympics. The latest out of Tibet is but one issue. It will be interesting to see how greatly they are affected, and I doubt I’ll watch much if any of the coverage, just as I have watched little if any coverage during any of the previous Olympic events. On the whole, I find sports boring, moreso watching it, so who, when and where makes little initial difference to me.

On the other hand, I am far more interested in what China may have planned after the Bejing Olympics are over. Politically and economically, things are bubbling there. The largest standing army with a national imbalance of men to women ratio, a growing demand for resources, ties to Iran, Russia and Sudan, along with continued issues over Taiwan and that they own a lion share of our debt, as our economy and dollar continues to tank….

I don’t know what the coverage is like in the States, but over here in the UK, it is a pretty hot topic. Some people are talking about everything from not watching the Olympics to boycotting Chinese products (good luck with that one). I wonder if many people in the States will even take much of a notice of the Tiananmen Square-like response that is likely to follow.

The head of the International Olympic Committee says not to boycott the China Olympics because of protests in Tibet. That makes sense doesn’t it? Let’s not offend the gracious Chinese hosts by boycotting their Olympic dog and pony show.. They can’t help it that over 100 Tibetan protesters recently got in the path of their bullets. Those protesters should be grateful that their country has been occupied by China for 50 years after being under self rule for thousands of years.

Moreover, many people here in America would like to see protesters shot in the streets or at least imprisoned when they ask questions about what we were sold concerning the events of 9/11 or the never ending war. How dare you question our government about 9/11 Bill Clinton stated recently. The next day Joe Scarborough said the protester should be water boarded. Sidekick, Will Geist, said people who question Clinton and the government about 9/11 should be sent to a secret CIA prison overseas… he wasn’t laughing either. O’Reily, Hannity, Limbaugh, and others have made similar statements. That’s pretty scary because of their propaganda power.

It won’t be long before protesters here are shot or imprisoned for speaking out. Mark my words. They already are being tased. You may agree with the strong armed tactics of the officials now, but one of these days you won’t. When the economy totally crashes, when the dollar is worthless, when depression hits, and when there are food shortages and un-employment, you will want to protest in the streets too. Ironically, the aggressive action of the officials you approve of now will be used against you too. People like me who would have stood beside you will either have been executed or imprisoned.

China has had over 50 years to perfect their tyranny over the people. Slave labor, forced abortion, and summary executions are the norm. Our country has raced to catch up. We are in a technological police state now. Everything you do and say can be tracked or traced by some government agency. (Yeh I know, if you aren’t doing anything wrong why should you worry you say) The least we can do to show our disgust with the communist slave labor police state is to protest the Olympics by not watching them and rewarding the Chinese along with their American corporate enablers.

Mot,

Very well stated! Your points should be obvious to the average joe, but unfortunately that is not the case. People getting arrested and tasered for simply utilizing their first amendment rights is humorous to these people. Ha Ha. The joke will soon be on them.

As for Joe Scarborough, I’m sure most have forgotten or don’t even know the rather unusual circumstances surrounding his resignation from Congress. I don’t want to get into details, but let’s just say it involves a female aide and her unfortunate “heart condition” that resulted in her skull being bashed in. Or so say the mainstream media. You know, those all knowing conveyors of truth who reported with a straight face that one of the hijacker’s passports survived a 500 mph impact with the WTC and was found on the ground after the collapse. Wow, a piece of paper can survive the fireball but reinforced steel cannot? Tell me more O’Reilly, tell me more!

Thanks for the encouragement Freedom Fighter. We will fight for our freedom even if they kill us and they probably eventually will. All we can do is keep speaking out. Most of the sheeple in this country will not tear themselves away from the T.V. long enough to deprogram their minds. ( By the way you blinded sheep, why do they call if Television PROGRAMMING hummm? It’s their little evil inside joke.) You buy their propaganda. If FOX or CNN doesn’t talk about it, then it must not be true or important to know. They tell you the people sounding alarms are crazy and hate America. Evil geniuses they are.

The slave masters who run this country depend on the cattle keeping their heads in the sand while they loot our treasury, mire us in endless war, make us sick with their genetically modified food, and take more and more of our freedom. I think people are just cowards Freedom Fighter. They deep down know things are unraveling and things are terribly wrong. They think our history was a random accident instead of being diabolically planned. They think if they just go along with the programming, the slave masters will leave them alone. They also feel empowered when they make their feeble attempts to debunk people like you and me. Like I said; Mark my words, they will soon feel the heavy boot of the oppressors too. I just hope more people wake up and educate themselves before they are loaded on todays version of the cattle cars..
