Would you have tried to stop the Starbucks thieves?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

UPDATED: There’s not a lot of setup for this topic. The story is pretty straight-forward — and enough to make anyone heartsick:

CRESTWOOD — The Good Samaritan who was run over by a car while trying to stop thieves from stealing a tip jar from Starbucks has died this morning.

Mary Jo Wich, a spokeswoman for St. Anthony’s Medical Center in south St. Louis County, said Roger Kreutz died about 2 a.m. today.

Would you have tried to stop the tip jar thieves? If you could, would you have any words for the man who did?

ABSOLUTELY!! I guess I would figure since they were young I could at least try to run them down.Of course now that I ma 65 it would take a wee bit longer.

No Way - call police w/ Lic#,description of car&occupants,direction they went,etc.
a few minutes later they would be in custody w/ no one hurt.

Maybe it’s just the Starbucks stores I frequent, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen more than ten bucks in a Starbucks tip jar at any given time. Even on those crummy days when I want to crawl into a hole somewhere and die, I view my life as being worth more than ten bucks.

Perhaps Starbucks ought to do what they do at Mokabes, where they have a hole drilled in the counter that drops into a jar underneath.

I happen to know the man that tried to stop those idiot kids, and his actions were heroic. We are very proud of Roger, but so saddened that his kind actions have caused such a heartless crime. I’d like to think that I would have the same reaction that Roger did, however in reality I wish he’d have just let the dumb kids go.

I hope he pulls through this. Please pray for him. =(

If the man that was run over dies, I hope the teen thieves are charged with murder. They intentionally ruined the life of a 53 year old man for the change in a tip jar.

As a retail security manager, I too would have tried to have a “go” with the punk thief. One never knows how anything is going to turn out, you only know that you need to try to do the right thing at the moment.

My most heartfelt prayers go out for this hero. May the Good Lord bless him with a complete recovery……

……..and may the perp be “blessed” with justice!

Your pic is out there pal, it’s only a matter of when you’re caught, not if!!!

I have to agree with nojtone on this one - get the license plate number and let them go. At most, I might have yelled at the kid as he walked out the door. It’s not like they were trying to hurt anyone. Of course, that’s what they ended up doing.

I just feel bad about the whole incident. I hope those kids confess on their own soon and that the victim survives and recovers.

Also, congratulations and thanks to the nurse that administered first aid on the scene. For all we know he or she saved that man’s life.

I chased after a thief once. I was in college and had 3 part time jobs, one of which was at a mall department store. We had a thief grab some goods and flee the store. I chased him out into the parking lot, and got the license plate number of the car he fled in (he was met by a driver). We had police officers who moonlighted as store security, so I gave them a full description of the perp, his car, and the license plate.

What happened? Absolutely nothing. They never followed up on it, and I learned a valuable lesson in police apathy. I also seriously pondered whether it was worth a fight (or worse) just to prevent a minor theft. Still, I hate to see bad guys get away with things.

So would I have tried to stop the Starbuck’s thief? Probably. But I would most likely do what I did last time; memorize the bad guy, his car and his license plate. Hopefully, the cops would have acted on the information – but for such a minor crime, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Meanwhile, I hope the good Samaritan recovers. No one should loose their life over a tip jar.
