Would you have tried to stop the Starbucks thieves?

UPDATED: There’s not a lot of setup for this topic. The story is pretty straight-forward — and enough to make anyone heartsick:

CRESTWOOD — The Good Samaritan who was run over by a car while trying to stop thieves from stealing a tip jar from Starbucks has died this morning.

Mary Jo Wich, a spokeswoman for St. Anthony’s Medical Center in south St. Louis County, said Roger Kreutz died about 2 a.m. today.

Would you have tried to stop the tip jar thieves? If you could, would you have any words for the man who did?

Johnh is hilarious. Only on an anonymous internet forum would a guy state that he would shoot two teenagers for stealing five dollars or so from a Starbucks tip jar. If he would one day act out those intentions, he would be in as much trouble as these two kids.

This whole episode is sad and stupid. These kids aren’t career criminals and they didn’t rob a bank. They’re likely high schoolers who pulled an idiotic (yet, not unique) prank and might even be new drivers. The poor man should have never put himself in the direction of the car where he could get hit. Now, he’s dead and those two kids can never pay that back. 3 Lives ruined for 5-10 bucks, pretty unfortunate.

To prevent future incidents such as these, I think Starbucks should remove tip jars from the inside counter AND the drive-thru’s. Sorry Starbucks employees but at $5.00 per cup of whatever, I’m not leaving tips anyway.

Other than that, I agree with above posts…be a good witness and get descriptions, license plates, direction of travel, etc. Not worth the life of a great man over $10.00 worth of nickels.

To the bad guys…How’d you sleep last night?

No, I probably wouldn’t have done what the good samaritan did. However, that’s in hindsight. I have no idea really what I would have done until the time came. Plus, we have to remember this man went to Starbucks nearly every day. He knew the employees and probably felt like this was home. He was simply trying to do a good deed.

To the family of the good samaritan: My heart goes out to you all. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

To the killers: Crime doesn’t pay and you will be caught!!!!

I am not an overly emotional person, but my heart broke when i heard about this story.
I love STL but its starting to get scary to even go get a cup of coffee.
This man was a hero, all he was trying to do was the right thing.
I hope the people who did this will be brought to justice.
That starbucks was a block away from where i used to work.
Scary times.

I really don’t know what I would do and I doubt if any of you do. I do know one thing, if these people are really kids, they won’t get anything out of it and if they are older, they won’t get much. But my problem, why do people go to Starbucks in the first place, guess they just have money to throw away. I was wondering if Starbucks has one of those silly signs that says no guns, I don’t know, just asking. It’s easy to say what you would do after the fact but at the time, do you really know what you would do. I also carry a gun where allowed but to use it if I or somebody else is not being threaten with bodily harm, probably not. The way the law is, I would probably be in more trouble than the kids. Why go to prison for whatever might be in the jar. I don’t think I would be front of a get away car though.

I have had the pleasure of knowing the Kreutz’s for the majority of my life. Roger and I were close to the same age and went to Piller church and DeSmet High School. I was saddened to read this story today. I completely belive that Roger, or any of his other brothers, would have tried to stop this theft with little or no thought for their own safety. That’s the kind of people they are. It is easy to stay uninvolved and stand on the sidelines while being critical. But not the Kreutz’s. Roger and his younger brothers have always been helpful and supportive of others. On many occastions they put others needs first. I know this first hand.

The question remains what to do in this situation. Personally I can not stand by while this sort of thing happens. I have been and will continue to get involved, even after this. At the very least one needs to be observent, get the color of the car, make, model and plate.

I firmly belive that what Roger did was the right thing. It may not be right for others, but it was for him. He will be missed.

I’d like to think that I would have tried to stop those kids…but I guess I would have been ‘pushing my morality’ on someone else, right?…and that’s anathema in today’s culture, isn’t it?!?

Someday - and I have no idea when - we’re going to realize the poison that moral relativism has done to our culture. My hope is that these teenagers at some point in their lives, maybe at home, learned that stealing is MORALLY wrong.

I don’t know if we can teach that ethic in our school systems anymore - but if we can, we have to ask ourselves: WHY is it wrong? Why is it MORALLY wrong to take something that doesn’t belong to you? The clear answer is that it violates one of the Ten Commandments that God gave to Moses (and us) on Mt. Sanai and it is NOT reflective of God’s standards for moral living as communicated over and over again through Biblical revelation.

I’m shocked so many people are defending the thieves and expressing anger at the dead good-samaritan. It’s not about the dollar amount in the jar, this is a case of doing what is right. If thieves know that somebody will always try to stop them, fewer people would pull these stunts. I decided a while ago while watching video of an elderly man being beaten with bystanders watching, that I would always try to intervene and do the right thing.

The teenagers should turn themselves in quickly or their murder sentence will just be more harsh.

Audrey said: “Because he chased the robber now the robber and his girlfriend will go to prison.”

Wrong. Because the robber and girlfriend stole something, they were chased. They will go to prison because they killed someone to get away with $5.
