Michelle Obama’s goal was to show Barack as ‘one of us.’ Did it work?
Michelle Obama is speaking at the Democratic National Convention right now, talking about her love for her husband, her daughters, her family. The AP said her job was to show Barack Obama’s personal side.
The media has written at length about Obama as the product of an interracial marriage, how he grew up without a father, how he took a job as a community organizer in Chicago. We’ve heard about his efforts to quit smoking. But on Monday night, we heard his wife’s take on why her husband is the kind of man who should lead our nation. She spoke about his work in the Illinois Senate and the U.S.Senate.
You can read all the analysis and Twitters and blogs and reaction to Michelle Obama’s speech on our convention coverage page of STLtoday.com But what do you think — did Michelle Obama sell you on her husband? If you were on the fence before, where are you now?

Absolutely great display and education of who the Obama’s are and a honest message that should hit right to the heart of what all working class Americans desire, it is just that some of these Americans appear to prefer to cut of their noses instead because of who the messengers are. How sad of a state to be in for theses ones.
it’s pathetic that they are being forced to “prove” their mettle when their actions speak louder than any words do. Compare the background of Barrack Obama with John McCain in terms of turning challenges into success…raised by a single parent….going to college and becoming an Ivy League educated lawyer….then foregoing the corporate route in order to give back to the community.
It is mainly due to the NONSENSE about flag pins and lettuce choices spun by right-wing MORONS that any of this is even necessary. If more Americans USED common sense and looked at the actual POLICIES of these individuals, then these dog and pony shows wouldn’t be necessary. I’ll tell you an “American Success Story” that I would like the country to know about: “only in America can a college drop-out get his own talk show and present himself as some sort of political expert and get paid MILLIONS to do it-and that piece of trash, ladies and gentlemen, is Sean Hannity” (ype-no college degree and makes MILLIONS spinning garbage and fabricating right-wing ideology).
Now in terms of comparisons between Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain…why even bother…I am sure that “Runaway Bride Eyes” will work her Stepford charm on the soulless conservatives at the RNC with her heart-breaking tales of the problems of millionaires in our country today (”sometimes we can’t even get a good table at The Ivy, y’all!).
Michelle Obama and her STORY make Cindy Mccain look like the vapid little rich witch she is…about as much substance as a Danielle Steel novel.
Wake up, America–you got hoodwinked by a retarded cowboy and his posse of “evil-doers.” It’s time to run the money-changers from the temples.
oh..and let me offer a “pre-emptive” strike to all your predictable neo-cons who are going to start the flag-waving about McCain and his military service:
He deserves our thanks and gratitude for his service–no more and no less. If you will recall, even that was NOT extended to John Kerry in 2004 because he spoke his mind about his experience in the military and his criticism of our government’s actions there.
Apparently the service of soldiers whose political beliefs mesh with the government’s is MORE valuable than the service of those who have opposing views.
Forget that this is completely contradictory to the core of our nation’s fabric of being a democracy…the sleazy GOP Noise Machine fueled by Rove and other pieces of human waste still march forward.
There is a special place in hell for Bush and his gaggle of misfits.
I was very impressed. She came off very well, and I really felt the energy. Of course, McCain was airing the same commercial over and over again during the coverage about the boogie-man is going to raise taxes — so be scared, be scared!
But you know what — we’ve lived 7 years of our lives in this country being scared by this administration. I’m sick of it. I’m sick of living in fear of the unknown. Things will happen, but you don’t stop living because of what might happen. I’m ready, and I hope the country is ready, to get back on with our lives and start rebuilding this once great country. Four more years of this living in fear is just unthinkable.
“And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.” -Sen. Barack Hussein Obama
I’m clinging to my guns AND religion. I don’t support illegals coming in to the US. ..And I’m voting for McCain in ‘08!!! DRILL HERE! DRILL NOW! PAY LESS! Does Obama relate to Americans? [[[see the quote above]]] Election over.
Wow all the liberals are up late tonight. She did a great job of reading from the teleprompter a speech written by someone else that she probably rehearsed 150 times.
Because, after all Served and D, it’s so much easier to accomplish what McCain has done since he had two parents. John didn’t have to work at all…What, exactly, are Obama’s policies? I mean this week, let’s at least try to stay current on which side of the waffle he’s on. The Democrats had Congress from WWII to 1992, and look what happened to the “working class”. Now this inexperienced guy is going to save manufacturing jobs? Being clueless about economics is fine, but if you think anything will change just because he’s a Democrat then you are sleepwalking.
Remember Rob, if you make $40,000/year, then you ARE rich to the Democrats. But hey, we can “rebuild the country” (whatever the hell that non-specific overused catchphrase means) with your bucks if you want, I work too hard for mine to throw them away on wasteful government programs.
Kurt’s question is more accurate than you think. A sales job was exactly what was going on tonight, nothing more. You guys are already neck deep in the Kool-Aid, and soon you’ll be in over your heads…in more ways than one.
As a political speech it was not bad. Not bad at all. The thing you have to ask your self is who wrote it for her? the message was played the words spoken ,but I detected a contrived “canned ” aspect to it. Mrs. Obama was trying very hard not to slip in any of her on opinions. She was the good political show piece, the stand in and the stalking horse. the DNC put her out there to be a target. She is a personable elegant lady ,but she was strained and forced out the words at times. the real test of the Obama love train will be how the DNC heals the building rift in the party between the Clinton die hards, the blue collar conservitive Dems and the Obamaites. The republicans are not perfect to say the least, but as a Vet I can not trust another president who has not served, or a potential first lady who will denegrate her nation with one speech and then never truely explain why she said what she said or retract it. Like it or not folks we are at war and you better pick the right man or the ghosts of the past may rise up to haunt you !
Tim,
Unless you make more than $250,000 per year, you will pay less taxes under an Obama administration than you will under a McCain administration. Both candidates plans have been vetted by independent financial analysts and there is concurrrence on this.
I find it amusing that middle and lower economic class individuals continue to vote for Republican administrations, despite the proven track record of that party in acting contrary to those individuals’ interests. Conservative economic policies favor big business and the wealthy; that isn’t an opinion, it is documented fact. In every Republican administration at least back to both Reagan terms, the government has run up a large deficit. We pay for that each and every day, on our backs and the backs of our children.
I watched some of the speech, found it dull, and turned the television off…
Mrs. Obama loves her husband.
Good.
They take their children to school.
That’s also good.
Beyond that, I’m trying to figure out what they were trying to show me…
Is he one of us? Hardly. He was born to an interracial couple, raised by a single mother, and turned into a Harvard professor, teaching Constitutional law. Frankly, he is that most rare of American icons – a self made man. I wish I had his level of drive, because I sure can’t go back and choose to be born into a family of multi-millionaire oil men with an ex-President for a father – or even a family of multi-millionaires with a Father and Grandfather who are Admirals in the Navy.
No, If I am going to make it big in this world, I will have to do it by the strength of my own effort. Just like Obama did.
