Vote on your nominees for St. Louis-area person of the year

Just to be clear, this is an informal survey of the opinions of people who read the Talk of the Day blog. We aren’t really naming an official “person of the year.” We have no magazine to adorn with the person’s face, we have no valuable sculpture to award to the person at a $500-a-plate dinner.

We’re just talking about newsmakers here as we muse over the ending of the 2008 year.

So, as I mentioned in an earlier Talk of the Day item, one of you suggested that we talk about the St. Louis-area person of the year. I said we’d use the criteria that Time magazine uses for its annual end-of-year annointment: “The person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important about the year.”

In the earlier TOTD item, you all nominated who you thought would be good choices. Today, we offer a poll for you to vote among those nominees. I listed the nominations in the order in which they appear in the last TOTD topic. I excluded people I thought were way too obscure to capture a general audience. I excluded people who, well, weren’t people (sorry, Uno). I excluded myself; I’m not sure my kids would even name me person of the year.

So, off you go. Time to vote.

She opened up new discussions world wide about internet usage that will have ramifications for years to come and made “cyberbullying” a household word. Megan Meier is unquestionably St. Louis’ Person of the Year.

Not that Randy Grim doesn’t do a great job but, when you start placing dog’s lives above people who have devoted their lives to helping their fellow man and those who have lost their lives devoting them to man, I have to question the poll responses!!

With all that said, Mike Swoboda or Ryan Hummert are the true heroes following closely by Albert Pujols!

As far as Drew, Thornton, Brito, maybe your next poll could be a “Most Hated” one. Their names belong there, not here!

Well Kurt Warner is loved here for the past and present and playing for St. Louis’s old team. If the shoe fits, wear it.

I had to read your article a second time to make sure I wasn’t crazy. You may feel you clarified your poll by stating “person or persons who affected the news and our lives”, but I feel there is no way Cookie Thornton should ever be mentioned in any article regarding “St. Louis person of the year.”

You’ve got to be kidding me. Catherine Hanaway was actually put on this list? I, however, would consider her a heavy favorite on a list of the most expedient, self-serving person in St. Louis.

Randy Grimm is a compassionate and caring individual who has taken his mission of caring for animals through Stray Rescue to levels that are amazing. His work must be heartbreaking at times, but the feel good stories that do have a happy ending are heartwarming. His unending devotion should be recognized.I am proud to say that I am a long time supporter of Stray Rescue and will continue.

Is it too late to add another name? I’d like to add Kurt Greenbaum, for continuing to tolerate in good nature knuckleheads like “questioning pollers,” who for some strange reason feel obliged to attack people without having a clue what they’re talking about.

Keep up the good work, Kurt. Those of us who appreciate good work appreciate what you do.

It’s good to see that Dan, Dick, and Larry all voted for themselves!

As far as Kurt Warner, his foundation is still active in the St. Louis and Southern Illinois areas. He hasn’t moved on and I think it’s clear that’s why he is still regarded in this area as a generous and caring individual. I am a huge cardinals fan and particularily Albert’s, but I won’t put a sports hero ahead of someone that helps poor defenseless animals and I don’t think Albert would either.
