Are you getting ready for a possible layoff?
Yesterday, the news was from Macy’s — the retailer would cut 7,000 jobs
Last week, the jobs cuts came from almost everywhere – Caterpillar, Pfizer, GM, Home Depot, Sprint Nextel, and the list goes on.
The Post-Dispatch hasn’t been immune. Neither has Anheuser-Busch InBev, and Enterprise, and the St. Louis Archdiocese.
We all know — and we’ve been told by all the experts — it’s going to take a good long while for the economy to recover. When I work the concession stand at our high school basketball games, talk that once turned to the teams and the kids now turns to the economy.
Plenty of the people I talk to are worried about their jobs. What about you? Are you preparing yourself for a possible layoff? And if you are, does that mean living off one income, or cutting expenses, or boosting savings — or all of the above?

For me it’s meant living off one income, my 401k. Being white, I’ve benn refused any assitance whatsoever and told by the Unemployment office that it’s “all about keeping a positive attitude, a smile is a frown turned upside down” these are their exact words. Two college degrees and 20+ years in my field I’ve had my career completely destroyed (this portion deleted by Amanda St. Amand). No turning back now though. Someday this will all come to a head and the bottom rail will be on top.
I wonder when it comes that those of us still committed to fighting back, have our jackboots are on their necks what mercy will our oppressors cry out for?
My story has been cutting back on some expenses, and putting as much as I can into the savings account. I’ve been planning on an eventual lay-off since mid-fall, not knowing when or if I’ll be let go in the near future. Since before Christmas I started sending out the resume & looking for other opportunities, hoping I’ll find something before I have to hit the unemployment line.
When I read about goverment tax breaks or future rebate checks to US workers, that won’t help stimulate the economy if there are many people like myself–saving every dime possible to have “just-in-case”. I won’t be spending it.
Jobless,
I agree that any rebate check would be pointless; every piece of economic data out there shows that people are socking money away. Even the going out of business sales aren’t drawing the crowds you might expect because a $300 TV is still $300 you’d be spending. Good luck.
Yes after 18 years I’m losing mine. So now I’m a 46 year old guy that had 6 figure income, with too much debt, too little saved, 3 kids in college and no way to work this through to a nice outcome. I doubled my life insurance by buying another $1M policy.
I am worried that the company I work for is going to go out of business, or cut it’s workforce by 75%. It’s a small company, less than 100 people, and business has tanked. Even if business wasn’t half as bad as it is, and it is bad, my company has been slowly laying off people here and there because they can’t afford to pay the enormous taxes that our government charges small business, and it’s only going to get worse.
If I lose my job, I will have nothing left. I am single, I don’t have any children, and although I love my extended family very much, I refuse to become a burden to them. I have a spot picked out on a local bridge, and I will be taking a dive off of it the very night I lose my job. One less person to muck up the potential job pool.
Amazed,
My family will get plenty of life insurance when I die.
You are a jerk. I hope it makes you feel good to kick others when they are down.
My wife’s co. is offering an early retirement package that is not too bad. They already laid off 10% of the co. in Jan. and are not done yet. I went to one of the meetings detailing the retirement package, and there was very few people there. If you do not opt to take the package you are S.O.L. when the ax falls again. We are leaning on the package as we still have time to adjust to something new. After 25 years she is ready for something else anyway. Less stress!
How come my post gets deleted?
A guy says, “I’m gonna jump off a bridge” and his post stays.
Mine says, “Go ahead” and mine gets deleted.
Anyone that considers a suicide as an answer to a job loss is the selfish jerk in this picture joey. You haven’t even lost your job yet and you already have the bridge picked out? Sorry. No sympathy for you.
Again, 6 figure income with too much debt and not enough saved…..someone made some bad financial decisions.
Amazed, you are far to impressed with yourself. Your response was deleted because it was your usual callous, self-important blurb.
To answer the question, yes, I am prepared for a possible ‘layoff’. Business is down and no man is an island ( even ‘Amazed’ ). I am a commission sales person. Have been for over twenty-three years. I’ve never seen it this bad.
