Will you give something up or do something extra for Lent?

Fat Tuesday celebrations can mean only one thing — Lent’s coming. Ash Wednesday marks the start of the 40-day season of penance, prayer and preparation for Easter Sunday, which arrives April 12 this year.

Some people give up something they enjoy during Lent — alcohol, sweets, TV. Some do something extra — volunteer work, extra prayers, extra church services. And of course, some people do nothing.

There’s always a kid, somewhere, who pledges to give up vegetables, or homework, or chores. Nice try.

Do you mark the Lenten season with any change in your behavior, or actions? What will you do for the 2009 season? You still have time — remember, it doesn’t start until Wednesday.

I don’t think gambling and getting soused off of gallons of Bud Light in the name of the Lord is a ‘Catholic Church tradition’.

I do like a good fish fry, though. Where can one find a good fish fry around here? I went to one at Seven Holy Founders last year that was terrible. The food was blah and I didn’t win any money on the pull tabs. Seriously… who has a fish fry with some good food?

All fish frys are is a fundraiser in the name of church tradition. Any way to exploit the sheep.

Hey Tom, when’s the last time you washed a homeless persons feet? What’s that saying about glass houses?

Tom said: “I grew up Catholic, unfortunately. I gave up things like candy, soda, and TV. But who did that help? Is that really on par with what you believe Jesus gave you?

Instead, I call for all non-hypocritical Catholics to hold a homeless foot wash. That’s what Jesus would have done. I’ve yet to meet any Christian/Catholic who has ever washed a homeless person’s feet. I’ve met a lot that’ll give money for someone else to do it, though.”

And, Tom, what have you done for your community - washed the feet of the homeless? Because if not, does that not make you a GIGANTIC hypocrite?

Isn’t it funny how if you mock blacks or jews or gays, everyone gets upset, but mock a Catholic? All in good fun. That’s liberalism for you.

I am giving up blaming every negative thing in the press on Anne Coulter, or George W Bush, or Bill DeWitt, or the Republican Party, or Bill O’Reilly, or Rush Linbaugh…o, wait, that should be Slugger’s Lenten sacrifice.

What am I giving up for Lent? Haikus!

Realitycheckstl,

I know it may be cool for Catholics to mock blacks or gays, but the rest of society lives by some updated rules. And who said it was not cool to mock Jews anyway? Everyone I know who has a problem with organized religion is an equal-opportunity offender. The fact that they make Hollywood movies doesn’t mean that their belief systems aren’t just as warped as any other religion’s.

My husband and I saved a life today. We went to the local animal shelter and adopted a dog that was scheduled to be put down tomorrow. That’s what we did for lent.

You know why that doesn’t make me a hypocrite? Because I don’t subscribe to a faith based on some guy’s teachings where he said to serve the poor, not pay for someone else to do it. That’s why. You subscribe to it; I don’t. Therefore, you’re the hypocrite. I’m just pointing that out.

Secondly, I can guarantee that I’ve done much more for my community than the vast majority of church-goers do. I don’t give money so other people will do my services. I volunteer for youth programs, sports programs, public health information, giving platelets, and via other programs.

What have you done? “Prayed awhile, ate some fish, and gave money so some anti-condom pedophile can teach some Africans that they’ll get AIDS for using condoms.” Don’t believe me? Look it up.

Tom you need some major therapy (us Catholics sometimes call it Confession). Anger, which you are clearly displaying comes from fear and you are clearly filled with it. It’s amazing that you say you do so much for others yet today you’ve chose to spend all your time critizing and condemning. If you not a Catholic anymore then move on…LET IT GO TOM!…those that have made OUR CHOICE to be who we are will continue to spread the love of Jesus and live our lives the way he asked us to, because we can. And I promise Tom, I will keep you in my prayers everyday and especially during this Lenten season…despite the comment I know will surely come from you and all the others that have dedicated their valuable time to ridicule Catholics. We on the other hand we not speak ill of you but simply pray for you!

After reading this thread, I have decided to give up reading comments on STLtoday.com. What started as a good idea has blossomed into a colossal waste of time and energy. These things are now nothing more than a forum for poor behavior, which most of you would not likely have the courage to exhibit if you had to do it face-to-face.
The time I would have spent reading these comments will now be used for prayer and reflection to grow stronger in my faith.
