Your favorite fish fry — and why
Okay, so we don’t want to talk about Lenten sacrifices. That’s clear. But let’s talk fish — more specifically, fish fries.
They go on year-round but there are hundreds more in the six weeks before Easter. One of our forum visitors made his own Google map plotting out local fish fries. And you can always check our events calendar to find all the fish fries listed there, too.
Plenty of people stick close to home for their fish fries, supporting their local church or civic group. I will be happily returning to my home parish, St. Joseph in Freeburg, for this year’s Friday night fish fries.
(This was our parish center, left, when it burned in Feb. 2007. That fish might have been a little overcooked. Our new parish center opened last last year)
The fish is good, and visiting with all our friends and neighbors is even better.
Everyone’s fish fry has something good to offer. Does yours feature the crispiest fish, the tastiest fries, the most homemade pies and cakes for dessert? Or is it the cold draft beer, the icy lemonade, the tangy cole slaw?
I throw down the challenge: Name the best fish fry, and tell us why.

I went to a fish farm once and caught sight of this one fry. He was a cute little guy. But I lost sight of him, then saw him briefly one time again. To this day, he remains my favorite fish fry.
Fish Fry has to have 1) Cod and 2) meatless spaghetti in red sauce. Everything else is window dressing.
2) Never understood as a kid why we gave up dessert for Lent except at Fish Fry. Or why Catholics spell it Fish Frys.
Crappie is hands down the best frying fish! (I have converted sworn fish haters) Walleye runs a close second….and nothing else comes close! (sorry) And the best place…My House! yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
I don’t like to complain, but over the past four days, “Talk of the Day” has only had two topics – and both were related to Catholics. Catholics make up about 25% of the population, so the topic is even more limited (especially since anything less than a compliment is attacked by Catholics).
I would understand it if there was a shortage of news – but the exact opposite is the case! There are things happening daily who’s effects will ripple through history for YEARS. And I can assure you, the “Talk of the Day” around my water cooler at work has nothing to do with Fish Frys – not even at lunch time.
If you don’t like to complain, don’t do it.
A fish fry is not specific to Catholicism, or Catholics, or Catholic churches. If you’d rather talk about Obama’s budget, or St. Louis school closings, or triplet calves, that’s why we have story comments. Enjoy.
Now, back to cod cut-ups.
note the article calls them fish fries. are they better than french fries or cheesy fries? i have never had fish fries so please enlighten me.
Queen of Peace in Belleville has very good fish. Right off of Frank Scott Parkway, give it a try. YUM
……………for years I’ve gotten my fish-fry dinner (and dessert) at the local Catholic Church school cafeteria. This year I’ve been inspired to change my habit and have non-Catholic “secular” fish-fry tonight.
Malone’s Grill has a fish ‘n chips platter with slaw, and that will be fine for me this year, and I won’t have to worry about offending anyone.
Umm…. for the Catholic basher/haters/bigots: I guess the reason we’re talking about Catholic Fish Frys is because synagogues don’t have fish frys?
I have always loved the fish at Sts John and James, now St. Theresa of Calcutta in Ferguson.
There are actually several Lutheran churches that I know of that have fish frys, and the Catholic population in St. Louis is actually greater than 25%. Look around.
That’s the great thing about the internet, or any form of media. You have the option to ignore topics that you don’t like. Or you could be bitter and comment on them. It’s all about choices.
