Has the economy led you to consider going back to school?
In today’s economy it is already difficult to find a job with a degree. It’s even harder without one.
The solution: The American Graduation Initiative, a 10-year, $12 billion plan to invest in two-year community colleges, CNN reported.
President Obama unveiled the new strategy Tuesday with a long term goal to offset the steadily increasing jobless rate.
The initiatives include:
• Community college challenge grants, to help underfunded colleges that are dealing with limited capacity and to build partnerships with schools and businesses.
• The Access and Completion Fund, to provide performance-based scholarships and give colleges the tools to design more programs around work schedules.
• Modernization of community-college facilities, with $2.5 billion to help renovate facilities and keep up with maintenance costs. The renovations will create jobs, Obama said.
• Open online courses, to create options online as a tool that some think can be more effective than classroom instruction alone.

In this economy almost completely devoid of jobs in the auto industry, do you think getting an associates degree or higher is becoming more prevalent to survive?
If you haven’t lost your job like some 9.7 percent of Americans have already, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, are you worried that you will because you don’t have a degree?
Are you considering going back to school due to the economy? Is it worth the time and money?
How do you think Obama’s initiatives will help you?

No way. Fortunately my job is secure and my company doing well, but if I were unemployed I wouldn’t consider going back to school. School was a necessary evil for my career path, nothing more.
for some people, school might be an option, but for many it is something that will eat a lot of money and if you aren’t careful, you will be up to your eyes in debt and still unemployed when they graduate or underemployed. Degrees are not always meaning anything except 2 or 4 or more years behind the job market. For a lot of jobs it is just a check off to getting or not getting to the door. They do not mean a job just a starting point on a search. There are a lot of jobs that do not always require a new piece of paper to get. There are a lot of people that are not even qualified for some jobs no matter how much school or degrees one gets. Please plan carefully as one has to consider if the degree or new piece of paper means anything or will have a benefit down the road on the career you want to now get into. If not, don’t go into debt up to the eyes if there is little return when you get it.
I earned my degree last December when the economy got really bad, and i still have been unable to find a job. I am interested in technology and i decided i needed more relevant computer experience because it has been 6 years since i had any formal training besides educating myself. I have been taking one class at a time since March through St. Louis Community College to try to get my skills back up. The jobs i have had previously were not able to take advantage of my skills so hopefully something works out.
Way ahead of you.
I have an MBA and I’ll be retired in a year or two so any additional schooling would just be for the fun of it. My advise to 95% of you is this. If you don’t already have a certifiable skill that requires you to be on site to build/assemble/fix/repair something then go to school and learn how to do that. Otherwise, whatever can be done through a telephone line from India will be.
How about a program to make going to school affordable without having to take out loans you’ll spend the next 20 years trying to pay off. $100+ for a stupid book. It’s price gouging at it’s finest, just because they know people have to have that book.
My husband graduated with a 4-year degree in May 2008. We moved to St. Louis so he could start his job, but after working for 11 months he was let go. An education will not guarantee you a good job. A two-year associates degree is worth even less. If the government wants to help people find good jobs then it should do more to support private enterprise, not give grants to community colleges. I know a lot of people with bachelors degrees or masters degrees who still cannot find work because they are overqualified for everything.
I thought Obama was only interested in women going back to school — specifically mothers. That’s all I’ve seen mentioned in the advertising. I’ve not seen one commercial or online pitch encouraging males to go to college. Are men even considered worthy of being eligible?
EJ:
Not if they’re white males because they’re to blame for everyone else’s problems.
Anyone else getting sick and tired of the way the PD removes postings just because they’re not politically correct and in line with the Propaganda they push?
