You are correct. According to an Associated Press story, the prize was awarded posthumously only once — in 1961, to former U.N. Secretary-General Dag Hammerskjold, after he was killed in a plane crash in Africa. The rules were amended in 1974 to prohibit posthumous prizes. However, the fact that Gandhi did not receive the prize in his lifetime, or even after his death in 1948, is surprising to many.

Here are some other facts about the prize:

_ The committee does not release the names of any candidates and keeps records sealed for 50 years.

_ Campaigns in favor of a particular candidate could be counterproductive, as the fiercely independent committee does not want to appear influenced by public pressure.

_ The nomination deadline is eight months before the announcement, with a strictly enforced deadline of Feb. 1.

_ Those who can nominate candidates for a Nobel Peace Prize include former laureates; current and former members of the committee and their staff; members of national governments and legislatures; university professors of law, theology, social sciences, history and philosophy; leaders of peace research and foreign affairs institutes; and members of international courts of law.

_ There are no provisions for revoking the prize, regardless of whether the laureate lives up to its standards.

_ The prize is awarded to encourage those who receive it to see the effort through, sometimes at critical moments, not only to recognize efforts for peace, human rights and democracy after they have proven successful.

This is a cruel joke isn’t it? There is virtually no foreign policy in the white house, Hillary has not been seen in months, Iran and North Korea are beating the war drums again…and all Obama did was go on vacations. How in the world does that translate into a peace prize? At least Carter did have the Palestinians and Israelis actually meet face to face in a more turbulent time. The world view of the U.S. is changing not because of do nothing Obama, but because all the liberal leaders of Europe have been voted OUT! (less Spain) The Nobel committee is just a shell of it’s former self and a worldwide laughing stock.

Don’t forget the thousands of beauty pageant contestants who really, really, really want world peace too.

If they’re now being given out for what someone might do in the future, then I certainly deserve one too. Can anyone of you say beyond all doubt that I may not resolve World Peace in the future? Obama didn’t end torture, didn’t close Guantanomo, expanded the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, voted against War Crimes charges against Israel for the Gaza slaughter, has expanded domestic programs for spying on Americans, bailed out foreign banks and foreign corporations in addition to underserving ones in the USA, wants to move the missile program from Europe to the Middle East, has filled his cabinet with Czars that don’t answer to anyone but himself, has issued almost as many signing statements to date as Bush did in his entire eight years, increased the budget deficit by 3 Trillion dollars….. He hasn’t done anything except make matters worse.
