No pumpkin pie? What else is for dessert?

Post-Dispatch reporter Georgina Gustin reports that there may be a shortage of pumpkin pie filling this holiday season.

It seems that this fall’s heavy rains have turned pumpkin patches into quagmires, compounding an already strained supply.

“Last year’s supply was short, so there really wasn’t anything in the pipeline,” explained Leo Darrow, a grocery manager at Dierbergs. “Then they had a late spring, a cool, wet summer, a rainy fall, and things just snowballed.”

While stores aren’t reporting bare shelves, they aren’t offering any incentives.

Dierbergs and other supermarkets haven’t advertised canned pumpkin in the usual preholiday fashion, Darrow said. “Everyone has some pumpkin now. But they felt if they advertised and discounted, they wouldn’t have enough to get through the holiday season.”

If you aren’t able to get pumpkin pie filling, what dessert will take its place on your holiday table?

Oh dear, the Post-Dispatch has just opened the Schnuck’s Panic Aisle…(Or should that be “Pumpkin Aisle”?) Seriously, I’m going to stampede to the grocery store to get all the pumpkin I need. It just isn’t thanksgiving without a tasty, tasty pumpkin pie.

You’re missing the “pumpkin beer” option in the voting poll. I’ll just have a few Schlafly pumpkin beers.

and as far as discounting canned pumpkin, I just saw it on sale at Schnucks last night for a buck a can.

Hmm, another loaded question? I’m not biting. I’ll have chocolate chiffon.

As a diabetic sweet tooth fanatic, I don’t care if there is a shortage of pumpkin pie cause I will eat anything sweet. I love sweets so much that I have actual withdrawal systems from not being able to eat them as much as I want. I love pumpkin pie with a lot of whip cream, but I only get a little slice served by my wife that makes it the size that she thinks I should have.

Life’s a bummer sometimes.

I’d vote blueberry, since I love blueberry pie. :)

Apple would be a close second though.

Here is to hoping that that Doug, Amanda, and the rest of the gang writes these from now on. I’m only commenting because like many people in the economy today, I have no job to lose. ::Glares at Kurt:: Bad “journalist”, bad! Scare quotes intentional so as not to sully the trade Doug, Amanda and the rest are involved in. It has to suck knowing you are tarnished by working with Kurt. What was he thinking?

Any kind of pie is great.
Sweet potato pie isn’t sweet enough for me to be a dessert. Make that a side dish. ;)
No pecan pie on the list–blasphemy!

I voted sweet potato pie, but what I make is more of a casserole and we serve it as a side. So I think I would change my vote to apple. mmmmmmmm with vanilla ice cream of course!
