The Birds and the Martins
We’ll be getting into the history of the old Bird soon enough, but here’s the Bird fact that seems to dazzle the readers the most: There have been 6 Bird artists since 1901, and 3 of us have been named Martin, and none of us have been related. Harry B. Martin started the whole mess (1901-03), S. Carlisle Martin (1910-1932), and I’ve been drawing it since 1986. The joke in the art department was, if you want the job, you gotta change your name!
Dan Martin has been designer and illustrator at the Post-Dispatch for over 27 years. In addition to sketching everything from mob trials to the World Series, he draws the weekly comic strip "Postcard from Mound City" and, for the past 22 years, the daily front page Weatherbird.
