Blagojevich impeached in House cleaning
The Illinois House voted 144-1 to impeach Gov. Rod Blagojevich. That action sets up a state Senate trial on whether Blagojevich should be thrown out of office over allegations of corruption and abuse of power.
The House impeachment vote, the first against a sitting Illinois governor, came exactly one month after Blagojevich was arrested on federal corruption allegations. Federal prosecutors say Blagojevich was attempting to auction off Barack Obama’s vacant U.S. Senate seat.
Blagojevich said the impeachment vote was expected, and part of a campaign against him. He said he will be exonerated of all allegations.
