What’s the Bird’s take on booze ads on bus shelters?

Some area bus shelter advertisements for alcoholic beverages have drawn the criticism of community leaders, and two of the ads violate Metro’s recently updated advertising standards.

Some shelters in St. Louis and St. Louis County carry a Colt 45 malt liquor ad with an image of actor Billy Dee Williams. An ad for Major League Baseball’s All-Star game at Busch Stadium touts Budweiser. Ads reviewed by the Post-Dispatch lack language mandated by Metro stating the legal drinking age in Missouri or warning of the potential hazards of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, while driving and while operating machinery.
Metro officials have pledged to fix the ads within the next week.

Why are ads on bus shelters being treated any differently than billboards here? Why is this a big deal?

Who cares about the content? It’s Billy Dee Williams!

The policy for ads on bus shelters are set by the Metro transit agency; there are various laws and local ordinances governing the content, size and location of billboards.

And nobody said it was a big deal; Metro is responding to criticisms of booze ads. It was deemed an interesting story and topic for the daily little cartoon Weatherbird that appears in the Post-Dispatch each day.

“…..have drawn the criticism of community leaders……”= big deal. It is a non-story though. I mean really, who cares?

Some care, some don’t. Those who don’t care, please continue along to the next topic that interests you.
