The Gulf of Mexico’s dead zone is 3,000 square miles, smaller than the 8,000-square-mile projection. The dead zone is caused by runoff from farms and cities along the Mississippi River, which runs into the Gulf. The decrease in size is being attributed to an unusual weather pattern that created high winds and waves, which pumped extra oxygen in the water.
