Retired Collinsville coach Vergil Fletcher, a member of the National High School Sports Hall of Fame who was considered one of the greatest high school coaches in the nation, has died at age 93.
Mr. Fletcher had a 747-171 record in 32 seasons as Collinsville basketball coach. He led the Kahoks to two state championships in 1960-61 and 1964-65, finished second in 1956-57, third in 1977-78 and fourth in 1949-50. He retired at the end of the 1977-78 season.
In football, he compiled a 99-66-11 record in 20 years, retiring in 1966. Mr. Fletcher also coached track and cross country and was the school’s athletic director.
Collinsville’s gymnasium is named after Mr. Fletcher and in October 2006, the street that runs in front of the school was renamed Vergil Fletcher Drive.
