What does the Bird think about shorter commute times?
It has happened slowly and quietly, but getting to work by car has been improving in St. Louis. According to a report issued today, the average driver in the St. Louis area spends a little more than a day stuck in traffic over the course of a year , down from a day and half in 1997. That is lower than in 45 other cities.
For the first time, the report shows lower congestion in most urban areas, owing to rising gas prices and the economic downturn that began in the last half of 2007. The most recent data in the report is from 2007, prior to the Highway 40 (Interstate 64) closures.
Drivers in Los Angeles face the worst gridlock, spending almost three days of the year in delays. The other most-clogged cities in the U.S. are Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Houston, San Francisco and Dallas.
