Tony LaRussa announced Monday morning that he’s returning for a 15th season as Cardinals manager — and he’s bringing former home run king Mark McGwire back to baseball as the team’s hitting coach.
“Mark McGwire is going to be our hitting coach. He’s a very special talent,” LaRussa said. McGwire wasn’t at the press conference.
It seems everybody has something to say about the move. Fans have been weighing in all day on STLtoday.com. Sports columnists Bernie Miklasz and Bryan Burwell will both share their thoughts in columns appearing in Tuesday’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch and online.

Hope Mark can find a way to get the Birds to hit with men of base. I think Hal tried but the results in the playoffs were not there.
I think it is funny how these so called sports reporters(burwell,cusamano and others) are saying Mcguire HAS to say something. No, he doesnt HAVE to do anything except try to be the best hitting coach he can. Since when do reporters decide what someone else has to do in this world?

It’s bad enough Larusso’s coming back, much less have McGuire as hitting coach. A poor manager and possible steroid user isn’t gonna make for much of a season. The Cardinals need CHANGE……NEW MANAGER AND NEW COACHING STAFF. The crew now is STALE!

This makes about as much sense as the Cubs hiring Sammy Sosa as an English-language instructor. This guy is a cheat, a fraud and a coward. I hope he gets booed wherever he goes. This couldn’t be worse.
Mark McGwire is a disgrace. He is an embarrassment to what used to be a classy baseball organization. This is a very, very, sad day in St. Louis Cardinals’ history. Send LaRussa and McGwire back to California where they belong.
Why not have Jose Canseco be the strength coach?
I agree RMD. The way Dave Duncan has dealt with Chris being let go, the lousy way that Tony deals with the press and the now the hiring of McGwire has put a black eye on what used to be a classy organization.
