The Bird watches the Dow climb back over 10,000
Another hopeful sign that the economy is improving occurred this afternoon when the Dow Jones industrial average passed 10,000 for the first time in a year. The Dow hit the mark in early afternoon and closed at 10,015.86, up 144.80 points.
The close represents a 53 percent comeback since early March, when stocks were at their lowest levels in more than a decade.
The Dow first surpassed 10,000 more than 10 years ago, in March 1999. It peaked at 14,164 in October 2007, then lost more than half its value after the financial crisis last fall, reaching a low of 6,547.05.
