St. Louis County voters will decide on a smoking ban next Tuesday. Proposition N would generally prohibit smoking in public places countywide, with the exception of casino gaming floors. The ban would go into effect on Jan. 2, 2011. The St. Louis Board of Aldermen passed a smoking ban last week that is contingent on the ban passing in St. Louis County. Kirkwood also has a similar measure on its ballot Tuesday that would take effect Jan. 2.

What should the Weatherbird say about the smoking ban vote?

Yes, Nov. 3, not “today.” I inserted “next” in front of Tuesday to make that clear.

I don’t smoke and I hate cigarette smoke so I vote with my wallet . . . as it should be. The problem I have with this bill is the definition of “public places.” How is a privately owned restaurant a “public place.” I always thought a public place was owned by the public (such as government property. parks, etc.). Again, I am not a fan of smoking but I don’t understand how we as a people can vote to tell a business owner how he can run his business. Yes, I know . . . we already have laws that govern business practices . . . I get it. But this is overstepping in my opinion. If the smoke bothers me at a place, then I go spend my money someplace else. Free markets always correct these things without government involvement.

It’s not a perfect ban, but it’s a start.

Interesting how folks rail against “government intervention.” What about Health Department rules governing restaurants? Do away with those too? Hell it’s a private enterprise if they want to sell tainted food so be it……..Anyone for some cat or dog?

Pass a smoking ban state wide now! This piecemeal approach is garbage. Also, whey are we waiting until January 2nd, 2011? Pass it. Enact it. Enforce it. Are we going to wait another year while Missourians dies from second hand smoke and we continue to foot the bill for their CPOD, bronchitis, lung cancer, litter, rotten teeth, etc? There are kinds of costs associated with smoking and I’m sick of paying for a bunch of weak drug addicts, yes, addicts. That’s what you are!

Be careful of the fine print on the ballot. The tax exempt American Cancer Society tricked the voters of Ohio into voting for a ban with exemptions, only to have them removed AFTER they were voter approved. If they got away with it once, you know they will do it again. Thank you American Cancer Society, we never knew all you do. The private vets clubs of Ohio who thought they were exempt according to the ballot learned what they do. I’m sure they are remembering them with with their donations and estate plans.

Today cigarettes, tomorrow sodas and high fat foods.
These “health movements” are NOT grass-roots movements, but rather, Corporate Agendas, funded by huge pharmas with 1) cessation products, or 2)& 3) sugar substitutes and diet pills to sell). When will we “Just Say No” to these fascists?

Let business owners decide whom they will serve, and CITIZENS decide with whom they will Assemble! Did we really intend to elect a “Nanny State?”

Smoking Bans condone and foment prejudice, and reinstitute legalized Segregation! Moreover, when 20-25% of the adult population gets treated as “second class citizens” they simply begin to stay at home. BUSINESSES LOSE or CLOSE and their employees lose jobs. The “anti-tobacco” crowd will NEVER admit this! The smoking bans have shuttered both charitable bingo halls and bowling alleys alike… and plenty of “Mom and Pop” corner bars. How many businesses in Missouri could suffer a loss of 20% of their patrons?

Before you jump on this “feel good” bandwagon, please stop and think, which of my neighbors will be unemployed in three months post-ban, and which of my own friends and family will I never see in my “local” again?

To Mr Hannigan and all the other critics, you must be blind. Second had smoke sucks and there is medical evidence. “Secondhand smoke dramatically increases the risk of heart disease and lung cancer in nonsmokers and can be controlled only by making indoor spaces smoke-free, according to a comprehensive report issued yesterday by U.S. Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona.” The smoking should include all establishments that people concregate in, including the casinos. As a former a smoker I also objected to the ban on my so called right to smoke. I now know I had no right to cause others to inhale my nasty smoke habit.
