The Weatherbird sees signs the economy is growing
Another indication that the economy is improving was released today. A government report shows an increase of 3.5 percent in the Gross Domestic Product, higher than the predicted 3.2 percent increase. It was the first growth after four straight quarters of declines, and the largest gain in two years.
The growth in the GDP, which includes consumer spending as a major component, is offset by concerns that it may not be sustained due to the significant unemployment that continues to plague the economy.
The report is being taken as a clear signal that the longest and deepest recession since the Great Depression has ended, though the official voice on recessions, the National Bureau of Economic Research, has yet to announce an ending date to the slump it said began in December 2007.
