DJ debut during Record Store Day brings back memories

Classic underground house music and early afternoons have no business being in the same sentence, but I threw them together Saturday afternoon during my guest “DJ” stint at Vintage Vinyl.
The occasion was the nationally-recognized Record Store Day, celebrated locally at Vintage Vinyl and Euclid Records with a number of concerts and DJ spins.
I spent much of the week over-thinking which songs would make my set list during my 30-minute DJ debut (no disrespect to real DJs; actually all I did was press buttons on my iPod.)
After pouring over hundreds of songs, I settled on seven mostly forgotten house/club songs, mostly from the ‘80s and early ‘90s, that sent me sprinting to the dance floor every time I heard them.
Just when I began feeling like I was understanding how not to allow gaps in between songs, Joe Edwards, wearing a nutty, homemade hat with a copy of Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock and Roll” thrown up in the center of it, began hovering. He was champing at the bit to begin his very diverse set.
And I was done, left wondering why I never pursued DJing as a hobby.
Here’s my Record Store Day set list:
– The Goodmen, “Give It Up”– Robert Owens, “Bring Down the Walls”
– House of Gypsies, “Sigh Sum Say”
– Colonel Abrams, “Music is the Answer”
– Ten City, “Devotion”
– Ultra Nate, “Rejoicing”
– Phuture, “Your Only Friend”
Special shout out goes to Vintage Vinyl for throwing me this bone, allowing me the opportunity to play these for songs for someone other than myself.
