Hip-hop comes to Lumen
Hip-hop comes to private event space Lumen, 2201 Locust Avenue, at 9 p.m. Friday for Spring Training: The Party Life event, featuring Roots drummer ?uestlove (a.k.a. Questlove).
Local DJs Charlie Chan and Meddi Meddi kick off the sounds at this Koncepts/Free Time event.
Admission starts at $10 for women/$15 for men, and there’s an after-party at nearby Nectar, 2001 Locust Avenue, though you must attend Lumen to qualify for Nectar.
The Roots are in town for a gig at Webster University Friday. Typically, when the hip-hop band plays here, ?uestlove breaks off for a DJ spin elsewhere. What’s great about his spins are that he’s known to play rarer old school hip-hop/R&B that reaches far beyond the typical Zapp/Parliament-Funkadelic hits.
I’ll never forget one night at Rue 13 six years ago when ?uestlove’s spin literally turned me into a dancing fool. A redo may be in order.

I remember ?uest at Rue 13- he put on a great performance. Hoping for more of the same this time…
