Record Store Day brings out Bottle Rockets and…me on the wheels of steel
Delmar Loop kingpin Joe Edwards, along with yours truly, are among some of the unusual suspects serving as special guest DJs spinning at Vintage Vinyl Saturday in recognition of Record Store Day.
And by spinning, what I mean is the store will hook up my beloved iPod to the store’s system and I’ll commence to pushing buttons.
DJs Needles, Enoch is Real, and Trackstar have nothing to worry about.
Since this offer came to me, (a first, I’ve never been a DJ despite an overwhelming collection of music), I’ve been torn over what my 30-minute set would feature.
Then I narrowed it down to two things — a set featuring Prince rarities and B-sides like “17 Days” and “Welcome to the Ratrace,” or a set with underground Chicago house and New York club music like Ten City’s “Devotion” and House of Gypsies’ “Sume Sigh Say.”
Underground house won out, allowing me to dig into forgotten gems like Ultra Nate’s “Rejoicing” and Mr. Lee’s “Come to House.” I figured the spin would be best spent with music most people have never heard before and never will again.
Warning – though a 12:30 p.m. set of deep house music is admittedly rather early, the music will still be as unforgiving as if it were 12:30 a.m.
Johnny Rabbit’s 10:30 a.m. set will kick off the DJ spin at Vintage Vinyl. That’s followed by Annie Zaleski at 11 a.m., Donnie Fandango at noon, Edwards at 1 p.m., Vic Porcelli at 1:30 p.m., Stars at 2 p.m., Doug Morgan at 2:30 p.m., New Pornographers at 3 p.m., Jeremy Essig at 3:30 p.m., the Cops at 4 p.m., Don Wolff at 4:30 p.m., Alexis Tucci-Hansen/Kim Tucci at 5 p.m., and Chilly C. at 5:30 p.m.
At 6 p.m., Joe Williams of www.musicsucks.net, not to be confused with Joe Williams who reviews movies for the Post-Dispatach, wraps it up.
Vintage Vinyl’s concert lineup begins at 1:30 p.m. with Positive Nature, followed by the Monads at 2:30 p.m., Gringo Star at 3:30 p.m., F5 Records and Soulition Crew All-Stars at 4:30 p.m., and Theodore at 5:30 p.m.
Euclid Records is participating as well. Its first concert is at noon Saturday with the Bottle Rockets, followed by Farshid Etniko at 1 p.m., Finn’s Motel at 2 p.m., Rough Shop at 3 p.m., Dave Stone at 4 p.m., and Tight Pants Syndrome with a 5 p.m. ending set.
DJ spins at Euclid Records during the day are by Rob Wagoner, Darren Snow, Jackie Boy, and Super Conductor.

Kevin C. Johnson has covered the St. Louis' music and nightlife scene for the past decade.
That sounds as if it will be fun….dont hurt them too much with the house music!!
