Vodka competition at Old Rock House finds surprise winner

Practice makes perfect, or at least that’s what they say. That didn’t matter for Lili Contini, a bartender for the Broadway Oyster Bar who won St. Louis’ Finlandia Vodka Cup Monday night at the Old Rock House.

Contini has only been bartending for a year, so her shocked reaction when her name was announced was genuine.

“I really thought my drinks were mediocre, but they worked out,” says Contini, whose drinks included a grapefruit martini, Finlandia Soco Hurricane, and African martini.

She competed against popular bartenders from Sub Zero Vodka Bar, Park West Grille, Side Pockets, Kitchen K, the Pepper Lounge, and the Old Rock House. They mixed their favorite drinks on stage and on the spot.

Celebrity judges, who got their fill of drink that night, included representatives from KPNT-FM (105.7 the Point), Alive magazine, St. Louis Zoo, Playback:stl, Contemporary Productions, the Vital Voice, and the Loft nightclub.

Oh, and me. I found the banana, grapefruit, and chocolate martinis especially tasteful.

Nick Whiteside of Old School House won the peoples’ choice award, not surprisingly. Arty J of Home nightclub hosted, DJ Trackstar spun, and Keenan Harris gets a shout-out for pulling the first-time event together.

My compliments.

You are obviously very secure in your masculinity to admit to liking beverages made with banana, grapefruit and chocolate. Or are you being polite by describing them as “tasteful”?

I won’t even go into how these qualify as “martinis”.

For the last few years, anything put in a martini glass has been called a martini. Anymore, it’s almost a broader catagory than highball.

Where’s the Old Rock House? I thought it got torn down decades ago.

Moe– it’s been renovated and added on to. It’s on S. 7th Street a few blocks south of the stadium. Their site is http://www.oldrockhousestl.com/

1200 S. 7th Street to be exact. It reopened last year, the renovations are great, and it’s one of my favorite new venues. You have to check it out.

Andrew: moe is right. This is not the original Old Rock House by any means; they have only lifted the name of the original. The original was founded in 1818; it originally stood on the current Arch grounds.

See http://www.landmarks-stl.org/architecture/st_louis_riverfront for some great old photos and the history of the original.

Not to take away from the current venue - it’s a great place!
