Lil Wayne’s new “Tha Carter III” sells a million copies its first week
Kevin C. Johnson

Kanye who?

Rapper Lil Wayne’s new CD “Tha Carter III” has done what no CD in three years, including Kanye West’s “Graduation,” has done, and that’s sell a million copies its first week.

The last CD to do so was 50 Cent’s “The Massacre” in 2005.

The New Orleans artist’s sales more than doubles the first weeks of big CDs from Mariah Carey, Usher, and Madonna, putting it on track to become 2008’s biggest CD. Lil Wayne’s first-day sales were 423,000 copies.

Lil Wayne broke records without benefit of a manufactured beef, and despite the fact the CD was heavily leaked prior to its official release date last week.

His success, in the midst of another year of tumbling music sales, proves a couple of things. People will still legitimately pay for music they really want. And though the generally accepted rule is that leaks take away from CD sales, they can actually fuel interest.

“The Carter III” features the hit single “Lollipop.”

Lil Wayne’s past hits include “Fireman,” “Go DJ,” and “Tha Block is Hot.”
