Sheryl Underwood opens up on and off St. Louis House of Comedy stage
It’s hard to pinpoint which encounter with raucous comedian Sheryl Underwood made the biggest impression on me.
There were the shows at the Funny Bone a few months ago, her shows Thursday-Saturday night at the St. Louis House of Comedy this week, and unexpectedly hanging out with her for three hours after Thursday’s House of Comedy show.
Her House of Comedy shows place her in Queen of Comedy territory alongside Sommore and Adele Givens.
Underwood, host of BET’s “Comic View,” had a horrible mouth Thursday, particularly when talking about sex and relationships. But when she spewed, you couldn’t stop laughing at all the raw realness that comes out. And isn’t that what live comedy is about?
As much as I enjoyed her off-the-chain performance, though maybe not so much her singling out my friends and I from the stage, I’ll most remember all of us hanging out with her at the House of Comedy bar until 2:30 a.m. Friday after the show.
Meeting celebrities after their performances is often disingenuous and a letdown, which is why I avoid doing so. (India Arie and Jamie Foxx were two of the most disappointing post-show meetings in recent memory).
When House of Comedy owner Dee Lee caught me on the way out the door and asked if I wanted to meet her, I was silently reluctant but agreed.
But the revealing Underwood’s openness and down-to-earth manner were refreshing, and I learned she’s smarter than what I might’ve expected.
Underwood’s House of Comedy shows, featuring Dee Lee, wrap up at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Saturday. Get more information at www.stlhouseofcomedy.com.
