Busch Stadium concerts: Who’s next?

dave3.jpg

Dave Matthews Band’s memorable June 7 concert at Busch Stadium, the first show at the new stadium, begs one question.

A month has passed since Matthews, and music lovers want to know what’s the next concert to fill the stadium.

Live Nation, the concert producers behind Matthews’ show, has already said it won’t do any more concerts at the stadium until 2009 as they evaluate every aspect of the Matthews show.

And no other concert producers have announced plans for a Busch concert just yet.

Still, there’s no harm in making some suggestions of acts we think would be perfectly reasonable fits for Busch Stadium down the road, right?

Here are ten headliners that would seem greatly suited to perform at the new Busch Stadium. These are just educated, merely speculative suggestions, none of which come from Live Nation, AEG, or any other concert producers. But they seem to make sense.

These guesses take into consideration acts with enough of a draw to actually sell tickets at Busch Stadium, and acts who still tour.

So don’t look for the Police, whose final show is in August; Van Halen, who just ended a big tour; or Bruce Springsteen, now that we know the Boss is headed to Scottrade later this summer, making him unlikely to perform at the stadium anytime soon.

Here are my suggestions. Maybe you have your own?

– Jimmy Buffett. He sold out Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in 14 minutes. Can’t wait to see what he can do with Busch.

– Hannah Montana. You can laugh if you want, but Miley Cyrus and her father Billy Ray Cyrus are laughing all the way to the bank.

– Metallica. The band returns with a new project in the fall, surely followed by a massive tour. A hard-hitting metal lineup headlined by Metallica would have an easy go at stadiums.

– Rolling Stones. Stopping at Busch on its next tour would be a nice throwback to long-ago Busch concerts.

– Prince. Prince missed a great opportunity to celebrate the 20th anniversary of “Purple Rain” in 2004; a 25th anniversary tour in 2009 would be even better.

– U2. This would be one of the most thrilling home runs at Busch ever.

– Garth Brooks. His selling out a week’s worth of shows at a Kansas City arena last year just screams for a stadium show complete with a Busch date.

– Madonna. Hasn’t St. Louis earned a Madonna date by now?

– Fleetwood Mac. They’re heading out again in 2009. A co-bill with someone like the Eagles would make this one stadium-ready.

– Sammy Hagar. Hagar may not be one to fill stadiums around the country, but he could carry St. Louis with ease.

I think the band - Puddle of Mud would be appropriate for Busch Stadium.

Why don’t you follow up dull Dave with sound-a-like John Mayer? Then Buffet for the geriatric chic set…then maybe Phish…

U2 would rule the day.

My recommendation would be to not see anyone at Busch Stadium. This is not a good place for a concert. I went to Dave Matthews and will never pay to see a concert at Busch again.

I agee with Bob I saw Dave Matthews (although I did not pay for the ticket) and just like I suspected the sound was horrible. I suspect if you had seats in the first 20 or so rows it was ok but where I was I was ready to hit Paddy O’s 15 minutes after it started.
I also saw Elton John at the old Busch and that was horrible as well.
As a matter of fact, Scottade is not that great for a conert either, obviously it was built for hockey and basketball and not concerts.

Totally disagree about the acoustics of the venue; I was at DMB at Busch on June 7, and it was the best DMB concert I have ever seen/heard. (I’ve been to three others at Verizon.) I’m not even a crazed DMB fan like I used to be, and I still thought it was awesome. Music I like + a venue I like + an amazing view of the city skyline at night was an all-together perfect combo.

It would be awesome if we could get Madonna to pay us a visit. Elton, Coldplay or Nelly could put on quite a show there as well. I saw Buffett at Wrigley, so I think he’d be great at Busch.

The venue was great. Don’t knock it.

I think that Busch Stadium is not a good place for concerts at all. Having the stage way out in center field puts them so far away from the crowd. Also by covering up the infield it limits the number of floor seats. If you were lucky enough to get floor seats you had a great view. All others were just too far away from the stage. The sound was not that great either if you were off to the side of the stage. All in all I would say Dave Matthews hit a home run that night but Busch Stadium struck out as a concert venue. Only way I would ever go there again if I had floor seats.
