All-male Madonna tribute band Mandonnas get “Into the Groove”
Who says there’s anything wrong with a bunch of guys putting on wigs, dresses, and cone bars while they get “Into the Groove.”
Certainly not the men who make up Madonna tribute band the Mandonnas, who are enjoying their growing fan base drawn to their quirky routine.
Their act includes singing and performing Madonna’s biggest hits with a full band, while dressed in instantly recognizable Madonna costumes.
“It’s campy and silly to see bearded guys on stage dressed like Madonna,” says Alvy “Alvydonna” Caby, who handles vocals and guitar.
Also in the band are Jay “Jaydonna” Conners on bass, Sean “Seandonna” Dallmeyer on keyboards, and Dave “Davedonna” Hagerty on drums.
The dolled-up men have about 30 Madonna songs in their repertoire including “Borderline,” “Like a Prayer,” “Material Girl,” “Open Your Heart,” “Papa Don’t Preach,” “True Blue” and “Live to Tell.”
“We try to recreate her music the best way four guys can, I guess. A dude singing Madonna will never sound like Madonna,” he says. “That’s why the challenge for us is to try to get the music to really sound like it. We take the music seriously.”
They live by one rule — “if it makes us laugh, we’ll do it. We have faith in the audience that they’ll be entertained by the same things that entertain us.”
The Mandonnas, a popular gay pride festival and Halloween act, will perform during Get Into the Groove: A Bodacaious ’80s Prom, at 10 p.m. Saturday at the Gramophone. Admission is $7, or $5 for those in fierce ’80s gear.
Q. How did this whole Mandonnas thing come about?
A. I took my wife to karaoke one night with some friends. We wanted to sing a Madonna sing and we signed up as the Madonnas. People thought it was funny. It was silly, and we thought it would be interesting to do a whole tribute of guys doing Madonna songs.
Q. Are there many all-male Madonna tribute acts around?
A. I think there are some California guys doing a tribute, but definitely not here in St. Louis. There are many tribute bands, but you don’t see many Madonna tributes, just Madonna impersonators.
Q. Talk about dressing up like Madonna.
A. We really do take it to the next level by doing different eras of Madonna, the ‘Material Girl’ era, the ‘Like a Virgin’ wedding dress, the ‘Blond Ambition’ Madonna. I do the ‘Lucky Star’ with the big bow and jean jacket. We thought that would add to the funny.

KJ,
I thought I was logging on to see a couple of hot dudes from STL who were members of Madonna’s tour. Clearly, not the case but this group looks like a fun lively bunch. The Gramophone should be rocking this Saturday.
Hot dudes from Madonna’s tour? wtf.
