Hugh “Peanuts” Whalum, a longtime staple on St. Louis’ jazz scene heard most Tuesdays at Brandt’s Cafe, has chosen Brandt’s as the spot for his 80th birthday celebration 7 p.m.-11 p.m. Sunday.

Cake and ice cream for the birthday boy is at 9 p.m.

Whalum will be joined byJeff Anderson on bass, Eric Slaughter on guitar, and Marty Morrison on drums.

Musicians who’ve played with him over the years will be in the house along with family members including his nephew, jazz artist Kirk Whalum.

Kirk Whalum said this of his uncle to Jazz Times:”I owe a great debt to my uncle Peanuts. The warm, passionate, almost gospel sound that came through his horn as he ripped through jazz standard after jazz standard is still very fresh in my mind from the first time I heard him when I was a 12-year-old saxophonist.”

The elder Whalum has toured and shared the stage with Nat King Cole, Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughn, Harry Belafonte, Miles Davis and Lionel Hampton.

A $10 donation to the Peanuts Whalum Scholarship Fund is requested at the door for the birthday celebration.

I’m always amazed that he’s still at it. He’s a fantastic musician and taught me lot about phrasing and interpretation as an instructor at Webster. A living legend unbeknownst to many…
