Miles Davis’ “Kind of Blue” expands for 50th anniversary
You really can’t get too much of a great thing, especially when it comes to something like Miles Davis’ 1959 “Kind of Blue” album.
That must be the thought behind Columbia/Legacy Recordings’ reissue of the classic recording, tied to the 50th anniversary of its release.
The super deluxe box set version of “Kind of Blue 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition” features:
– Two CDs, the original album and a second one with studio sequences, false starts, and alternate takes from the 1958-1959 sessions, plus 17-minutes of “So What” live in Holland from 1960.
– A newly-produced documentary featuring jazz superstars
– A 60-page full color book with tons of photos
– A blue vinyl 12-inch LP
– Liner note essays written by Davis experts Gerald Early and Francis Davis
– Session transcripts by Ashley Kahn
– A detailed timeline by Bob Belden and Ken Vail
– Reproduction of a 1959 Columbia promo brochure; six 8 x 10 photos; a 22 x 33 fold-out poster
It’s all out Sept. 30, with a traveling exhibit of Davis photography by Morrison Hotel Gallery following later in the fall.
“Kind of Blue” featured such jazz luminaries as Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb. It’s considered one of the greatest albums of all time, and is the best-selling jazz album ever.

Kevin C. Johnson has covered the St. Louis' music and nightlife scene for the past decade.
One of the truely legendary albums of all time. Would be a great addition to anyone music collection.
It always aggravates me, that the youth grab onto the ”crappy” music of today and skip past the great jazz musicians. I think there should be more education about the jazz great of yesterday.
