The St. Louis Jazz and Heritage Festival is taking a year off.

The annual event will not take place in 2009, according to a statement released late Thursday by Cultural Festivals, which produces the jazz festival as well as the St. Louis Art Fair and the Big Read.

“The jazz festival has been enjoyed by many people and the board of directors’ decision to take a hiatus was a tough one to make,” acting executive director Laura Miller said in a statement.

“Cultural Festivals is currently in the midst of conducting a search for a new executive director and is reviewing the organization’s structure. Unfortunately, we do not expect the new executive director to be hired and the organizational review to be completed in time to plan and book performers for a 2009 event,” Miller said.

The art festival and the book festival will still take place in 2009.

Sheldon Concert Hall and Jazz St. Louis, original presenting partners of the jazz festival, have had early discussions on ways to present a jazz event next year that may or may not include participation from Cultural Festivals.

This is a shock…I’m a little surprised that those that have been working with the organzation wouldn’t be able to pull it off even during the search for a new director, it is also scary that because one leaves the show is stopped.

Well, I will just save up my energy for 2010 because when they decide to come back I still plan on supporting

WHAT?!?! Major disappointment. A whole city groans. Man, people faithfully came, even in the rain, to the Jazz Festival. I agree with Suite STL: Why can’t planning be done and artists be booked with an interim director? If the Jazz Festival doesn’t come back bigger and better in 2010…I don’t know what I’ll do.
