Poll: How to fix “American Idol”
We’ve got another season of “American Idol” behind us, and already wheels must be spinning around what changes and fixes TV’s top show can make for next season to make it better.
After all, the ratings are noticeable declining, and the just-ended season wasn’t the most exciting, despite the shock of Kris Allen’s win.
There are any number of tweaks the show should consider.

Kevin C. Johnson has covered the St. Louis' music and nightlife scene for the past decade.
idol does not need to be fixed. a show that gets 40 million for its final and is totally dominating nielsens ratings for the 8th year in a row, does not need changes! if anything they should go back to the way it used to be. yeah, i mean, get rid of Kara
AI doesn’t need to be fixed. They are nr 1. Why mess with something that is clearly working?!?! (yeah, the fact that they are still nr 1 after all these years proves it is working!) Anyone complaining about Idol needs to get a reality check and look at the darn ratings chart and wow… Idol is at the top! and not just at the top, but it’s beating its biggest competitor DWTS with several millions!
There is one thing I would really like to see change on Idol. I would like them to ban anyone who has ever had a recording contract from being a contestant.
Burn it down. This crap has run it’s course along with Survivor, Apprentice, Biggest Loser and all the other reality crap on TV.
Get real singers!
Gee….if only it could get some attention from the media, who seem to think that the public wants to be spoon-fed this pablum EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Many of the above suggestions are good ones. Since the questionaire only allows for one, let me add a few:
1. Show behind the scenes of contestants choosing songs, showing their thought process.
2. Give the judges less time: either they have something intelligent to say or nothing. If that means going back to 3, fine…but I think the jury is out on who is actually the worst judge. They can all (even simon) be quite bad and off-point.
3. Don’t focus on the bad auditions, they’re repetitive, boring and condescending.
4. Can the group numbers and focus on just a few over the season–they are usually pretty awful. Maybe more duets instead. The Allison and Adam duet and the Adam and Kris duet were fantastic (but maybe it’s just the power of singing with Adam).
Vote the worst off instead of voting for the one you want to stay. I know this will mean less text messaging income, but it’s a much better way to weed the worst out first and leave the best.
- One vote per phone number.
- No more cheesy LIP-SYNCED group songs. In fact, no LIP-SYNCED performances from anyone: contestants, guest artists, PAULA.
- Just like the Olympics: fewer “human interest stories” about the contestants and more performances. Yes, this translates to a shorter show.
- Results shows should not be any more than a half-hour. Everything until the last 3 minutes is pointless.
- Drop Paula. She’s so drugged up half the time that she’s incoherent. At least Kara makes sense most of the time.
- Reveal the voting numbers.
- The “bad audition” shows are cruel and mean. Show a little class and stop putting thru atrocious singers just so America can laugh at them.
so many things wrong with this, not the least of which is the forcefeeding through an exceedingly popular medium of the “everybody is a rock star” mentality permeating today’s society.
want to give AI some credibility? make it a radio show. Make people tune in to something that isn’t the boob tube, remove the visual bombardment of lights, glitter and oversensationalism. Yeah, you’ll lose some advertising revenue (the main reason this idea would never fly, because let’s not forget kids, this is not, and never was about talent. it’s about marketability and putting another image out there for the masses to buy up) but the end result would be significantly more pure.
