Poll: What did you think of the BET Awards?
Sunday night’s BET Awards seems destined to be the most-watched in the history of the program, dominating Twitter’s trending topics last night and gaining must-see status after Michael Jackson’s death Thursday.
The program, hosted by Jamie Foxx, was revamped at the last minute to reflect Jackson’s death, with special tributes, performances, and vintage footage.

Kevin C. Johnson has covered the St. Louis' music and nightlife scene for the past decade.
This was a shear MESS….I’m so embarrassed to be black LOL…..disrespectful jokes and distasteful humor….NO CLASS……NO RESPECT……NO NOTHING…..and why does Johnny Gill still sing so hard……and BEYONCE…BEY….I STILL DONT GET IT!
I agree. It was horrible. I understand that everything switched at the last minuted because of MJ’s death, but come on. Jaime Foxx seemed intoxicated (did you see after the show how the lady handed him the script, and he threw it back at her?). Everyone was cursing. Soujaboy was Horrible. The best things were BBD, Maxwell, and Neyo’s performances. All the others were wack. Beyonce…poor Beyonce….And Guy…was that really Aaron Hall? What happened to his voice? AND WHERE IN THE WORLD DID THEY FIND TEVIN CAMPBELL!!!!! LOL! He can still sing, though.
I agree, I agree, I agree. Loved Ne-Yo’s performanc. O, and what the hell was going on with Keyshia Cole??? mmmmmmmmmmm, Not the best BET.
There was so much wrong with the show, so I will focus on the positives: Ne-Yo’s performances, Maxwell, Jay-Z, O’Jay’s tribute (sans Don Cornelius’ painful parts). I was also happy to see Tevin Campbell make a reappearance.
Hmmmm where do I start (cracks knuckles)….. Aight, well first off I really don’t think the show was HORRIBLE… I think two things really messed it up thought. 1.)Obviously MJ’s passing… They rushed and changed things around so quickly that it became just a really unorganized show. 2.) EVERYONE (except me) was expecting BET to deliver this mind blowing tribute to MJ. I knew that wasn’t gonna happen. They should’ve just did the show regular. Did SOME sort of small tribute to him. And did a HUGE Tribute SHOW later on.. It’s impossible to truly HONOR MJ in the middle of an awards show, the way everyone else was expecting them to.
I think the hightlights of the show were pretty much NeYo. Everytime he got onstage it was great. It brought tears to my eyes when he sang Lady In My Life (my favorite slow MJ song)and having BBD, Guy, and Keith Sweat come out was dope. (but where was Boyz II Men???)… The OJay’s tribute was fire. And Maxwells performance was VERY “pretty” no pun intended.
Seeing Janet come out onstage, would’ve given me chills (but I knew she was going to come out cause JD had twitted about it).. Her strength is truly admired, and my heart and prayers are with their family.
NBC, CBS, or some other major network will put together the best MJ tribute we will ever see with ALL major celebs of all races. That’s the one I’m gonna be waiting on.
Agreeing with MarQ quite heavily. It was a horrible representation of us as black people (or maybe just a little too accurate. Discuss…), entirely too much cussing and whoever was on the censor button just got fired. More buffoonery and coonery than I would’ve preferred. Half-baked tributes. Confusing performances from Keri Hilson (Elvis? What was that?) & Beyonce (the wedding leotard was too much). Bad production: how do you NOT clean the mess on stage after Maxwell’s performance? I’m sure someone at OSHA was cringing. Just another in the LONG list of disappointing BET Awards shows, which they’ll re-broadcast 15 more times.
BET continues to portray blacks in negative ways, I was hoping they could set aside their classless acts, but no. I could only fathom 20 minutes of the entire broadcast. This is why i dont watch BET, they used the MJ tribute more as a tagline, to get viewers.
This is why I stop watching award shows. If they wanted to pay tribute to Mr. Jackson they should have just let Ne-Yo sing some of his songs. Since he is the only person who can sing in Mr. Jackson’s key resgister. Then they should have just played his video’s. There were only a few parts that were nice Maxwell, Ne-Yo, and the O’Jays. But the rest was just a joke and a horrible way to celebrate the life of should a talented person like Michael. Bet should be apologizing to the Jackson family for that perfomance.
Not a great show at all. The big Michael tribute was a lovely idea, but somewhat badly executed. I agree with the poster who said that BET should’ve planned a big tribute for later. I’m offically sick of Jamie Foxx. Jamie singing, Jamie telling bad jokes, Jamie making inappropriate Michael tributes- i.e. the “Bad” redux- isn’t in bad taste to make fun of someone when they’ve just died? He appeared to have been drinking from the begining of the show onward (and most definitely during the after party show). At times I just wanted him to just STFU.
Also, don’t have Little Wayne perform on your network if your are going censor practically his entire song. I couldn’t even tell what song it was because of all the censoring. On a postive note, Neyo and Maxwell were sublime, as were the Ojays. Queen La and Mary mary were good too. Guy and Keith Sweat- showing their age. New Edition- good but not great. Beyonce- WHATEVER. Ave Maria is a beautiful song, as is Angel, but neither of them suit her. And despite what Jamie said, her song was not a tribute to MJJ because she did the exact same performance here in DC THE DAY BEFORE HE DIED. The best thing about the show was seeing Janet Jackson display such strength and composure as she tried to hold back her emotions while speaking about her big brother. Papa Joe was….odd. He was acting as if Michael couldn’t be at the show because he was on holiday or something. Maybe the death has not hit Papa Joe yet.
After such a promising start by New Edition, and even the early comedy by JAIME FOXX set the tone to what might have been a class tribute show. Sadly Ne-Yo was the most consistent and respectful of all the performances on the night. The OJAY’S did show their class as well and I commend them for bringing a little class back to the evening. Despite the fact that there was a 3 day window to prepare and especially in light that it was the death of an icon the performance of Lil wayne and his crew was disgraceful and disrespectful, Ving Rhames comments were equally disgracegul, T-Pain coming to the show with “A BIG ASS CHAIN” was not in any way funny or cute in light of the gravity of the show.
Now there were good moments and I stress moments, but overall it was not a very good show. Since 2003 I always thought the show kept getting better with each year but last night was terrible. How can the CEO sign off on such ludicrous ignorant behavior. Is this what Michael stood for?, is this the kind of presentation he would have liked or included in his own concert? HELL NO!
Thank God Janet shook everyone back to reality.
The show was more of a forum to promote mediocrity in the form of TINY and TOYA, Jaime Foxx’s tour and if this is the direction BET is taking for it’s immediate future then expect ratings to plummet. Shame on BET and John Cossette you all failed on this one!
