"Up in the Air" soundtrack
The soundtrack to “Up in the Air,” with songs from CSNY, Graham Nash, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, and the title track by St. Louis singer-songwriter Kevin Renick, is out Dec. 1 on Rhino Records.

The movie stars George Clooney, was directed by Jason Reitman, and was largely filmed in St. Louis earlier this year.

Reitman says the soundtrack is like a character in the film. “I start thinking about the music very early on. While I’m writing the script, I’m putting together a matching iTunes library. The result is a collection of songs that speaks to the nature of travel and warmth of human connection.”

The soundtrack features two previously-unreleased songs, including Renick’s track. The song was handed to Reitman on a cassette during a speaking gig here. Renick, recently laid off at the time, heard Reitman was working on a film adaptation to the book and wrote the song with the story in mind.

The track, complete with Renick’s spoken word introduction included on the original cassette, plays over the end credits.

Here’s the rundown on the CD:

  1. “This Land Is Your Land” – Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings
  2. “Security Ballet” – Rolfe Kent
  3. “Goin’ Home” – Dan Auerbach
  4. “Taken At All” – CSNY
  5. “Angel In The Snow” – Elliott Smith
  6. “Help Yourself” – Sad Brad Smith
  7. “Genova” – Charles Atlas
  8. “Lost In Detroit” – Rolfe Kent
  9. “Thank You Lord” – Roy Buchanan
  10. “Be Yourself” – Graham Nash

Hi,

I have been a good friend of Kevin Renick’s since the mid 1970’s while with him when he was thinking, documenting, writing and composing of possable tunes for others to enjoy. He mainly wrote words about his average life and troubles of the times growing up in St. Louis. He, I and others had even formed small bands together and also had made tape recordings of our road trips together. They had included our thoughts of people and we had met and places we had gone. I knew one day Kevin would get his music and words out there, in some capacity for someone to listen to and enjoy. I had no idea it would ever lead to this unbelievable story of “Up In The Air” madness. I have been setting up local promotional dates on radio, coffee shops and news stations. I also have been telling my friends as best I can about his new found success, and we all are wishing him all the luck and joy in the world that will come from this new awakening.

Kevin, We are all pulling for ya buddy. You have a great gift and it has been finally revealed.
