The rock world is abuzz with the possible news that Steven Tyler’s Aerosmith days may be behind him, just as the classic band is approaching its 40th anniversary.

After lead singer Tyler’s injuries sustained in a fall in a South Dakoka concert, the band canceled the remainder of its summer tour (the same tour that opened at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in June).

Now, Tyler is telling Classic Rock magazine his future involves focusing on “Brand Tyler,” and the band’s Joe Perry says Tyler has quit returning the band’s phone calls.

Can Aerosmith carry on without singer Steven Tyler?

Steven’s distinctive vocals make Aerosmith, and there is NO way Aerosmith could go on with him. I feel bad for Brad, Joey, and Tom for yet again getting caught in between Steven & Joe.

Maybe when Chickenfoot is finished Sammy could join Aerosmith….

Kevin, glad you put the choice “Steven Tyler isn’t going anywhere”, b/c that’s what will happen. Aerosmith is his life - he’s just trying to capture some headlines. There is no brand Tyler without Aerosmith. Aerosmith is the THE brand.

In regards to what “Dustin” said…..

“Who cares. They’re old. Go support another band..”

Oh Dustin…you poor naive little child….I don’t think you understand or realize how much influence and impact bands such as Aerosmith have on bands of today. Without these forerunners many of today’s acts wouldn’t even be around.

“Brand Tyler” would take a severe beating if he left Aerosmith. Both would go from playing sold out amphitheaters to small club gigs. Both brands would suffer immeasurably and they’d be reluctantly licking each other’s wounds together after a year or two and attempting a comeback.

The problem is that you can pull this off when you are still relevant (see Van Halen) or when a member dies (see Lynard Skynard, AC/DC, Boston, etc.) or the guy you are replacing just simply doesn’t have it anymore (see Journey). When you are both well beyond the twilight of your career and no longer pop-culture relevant, the only people coming to your concerts are people trying to relive the magic of the past, not the future. When you change line-ups, game over.

Uh, I think you mean “Tyler” not “Perry” in the second graph ;)

“After lead singer Perry’s injuries sustained in a fall in a South Dakoka concert, the band canceled the remainder of its summer tour (the same tour that opened at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in June).”

Trying to replace Tyler in Areosmith would not be realistic.. After almost 40 years as front man Tyler is the “voice” of Aerosmith.

Any attempt to replace him and still call the band Aerosmith would be ludicrous and I can’t believe Perry has even suggested such a move. They wouldn’t be able to sell out the Pageant!

Perry and the rest of the crew’s only reasonable recourse would be to start a new band under a new name and write new songs (if they insist on replacing Tyler)!

Are you kidding? Like who? I can’t think of a single act of any relevance out right now that sounds like they’re influenced by Aerosmith. Don’t get me wrong, I like Aerosmith as much as the next guy, but it’s pretty obvious they’re just a really good clone of The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. Sure, you could say some of the rock bands out of the 90s were influenced by them, but now? I ain’t hearin’ it.

Time to retire, fellas.

“I can’t think of a single act of any relevance out right now that sounds like they’re influenced by Aerosmith.” Metallica, Guns & Roses, STP, and any other hard rock band that came out in the 80’s or later is influenced by Aerosmith, and those bands, in turn, influenced the hard rock bands we hear today.
