Bellerive Wet But Ready

It’s soggy at Bellerive Country Club this morning - hey, there’s some profound internet insight!

That’s like saying playoff hopes are a bit tenuous for the Cardinals these days, Steven Jackson says some curious things now and then, or the Blues could use some help on the power play.

As I walk around the property, crews are busy trying to get the fairways and bunkers in playable shape for the 10:40 a.m. start. And it is still raining a little bit.

Traffic into the golf course was especially bad this morning, as I-270 was bumper to bumper coming north, all the way from Tesson Ferry. On days like this, every lane is a depressed lane, if you you know what I mean.

One might assume all the water would make the greens extremely soft and slow for the tournament, but that’s not necessarily the case, according to Chuck Gast. The Bellerive superintendent said the rainfall sometimes can have the effect of flushing out the greens and as they dry off, they become even harder and faster. One thing is certain, they will be cutting and rolling the heck out of them this morning.

You have to feel for the tournament directors and managers, who were put in an impossible position when the rain that continued to fall on Thursday wiped out their parking lots. You can bet every alternative option was exhausted before they settled on shuttling in fans all the way from Harrah’s and Verizon.

But keep this in mind before you grumble too much about the parking situation: It is ordinary for fans to have to take shuttle rides of 20 or 30 minutes - in some cases much longer - to get to golf tournaments. Having the Hunter Farms parking so close to the facility for the BMW is a luxury most events can’t match.

St. Louis fans are a little spoiled with that setup, so keep that in perspective when you take the shuttle ride to the golf course today.
