A couple weeks ago, the Editors’ Desk carried an item about legislation proposed by Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin, D-Md., aimed at saving failing newspapers by allowing them to become nonprofits.
The idea already has its fair share of critics.
U.S. Sen Benjamin L. Cardin, a Democrat from Maryland, has introduced legislation that would allow newspapers to operate as non-profits with tax-exempt status, like PBS and NPR.
His goal is to help local papers, not newspaper chains.
